Dear Author, Ali Cordoba

Your article is full of sweeping statements. While it is the message many Muslims want to hear - that Islam is the best alternative for the world - we have not seen any implementation that is worthy of mentioning. Tell me what is the freedom Islam offers. Muslim countries so far have been successful only within its own community of Muslims. They have no proven success to interact well outside their community. Muslim have never proven successful to demonstrate tolerance and to work together with communities different from them. I am not being bias, but is open to hearing about how Islam can face modernity or it is still based on very traditional views that can not appeal to non Muslims. I would love to hear from the author or other Muslims on the following issues of modernity confronting Islam which has shown no or little results that are appealing to the world.

1. If religion is important and requires a daily prayer of 5 times a day, how do the Muslims make up for their lost time in work? Are they willing to consider lower wages? If religion is main priority, then the Muslims should be contented with their efforts and not be greedy and claim they need what others have achieved. If you sow 1 seed, you get 1 grain of rice. The time taken in prayers should be matched to sow more seed on the ground to get more grain of rice. Maybe Allah s.w.t. would match this with greater zeal at work. But if that is absent, then the Muslim ought to be contented with the sweat of his brow and not be greedy to say they ought to have the same wealth as others. Why claim that you need to have 30% equity ownership, when you do not work as hard? The same goes in the global world. Either you live in a small island composing of only Muslims and be contented with your work, or you compete on equal grounds with everyone. Why hold a riot and complain about mistreatment and not getting what you deserve when you are not working as hard as others? If you do, then good for you. You will surely get what you deserve.

2. The lifestyle restrictions of Muslims vary. The West and the rest of the world may be able to live with Muslims who fast, do not eat pork and wear their tudung. We are not just talking about the West, but other countries such as Japan who would frown upon a Muslim who have such strict restrictions on diet. But, this is tolerable. But, the West can not accept a Muslim who has strict restrictions on whether to wish his neighbour Happy Deepavali, or be strict on not letting their woman be interacting with the male community, have separate dining rooms for male and female. It is definitely not right to generalise that all Muslims are strict and can not interact with non Muslims. But there is yet standard guidelines on lifestyles that govern Muslim lifestyles that are liberal and that allow better co-existing with the non Muslim world. The Muslim world need to evolve swiftly and unity else it will not face the test of globalisation.

3. The Muslim community hold a tight briddle on their fellow believers. These are against the policies of freedom and democracy. Is this justified? Should not all humans be given freedom of belief? What is the treatment towards apostacy (murtad)? While some are liberal and say this is not in the Al-Quran, not many want to stand up and declare that Islam is indeed a free religion that anyone is free to leave the religion at anytime. Do you dare to claim to this? How many Muslims would support freedom of religion? With more mixed marriages, freedom of religion will be a more important issue to be decided upon. What is the Muslim stand on freedom of religion?

There are many other questions but this 3 alone is the test of modernity the Muslims need to confront, evolve and reason with others. Few are willing to reason because they either are ignorant about the right answers from the Al-Quran, or they fear there are no answers from Al-Quran and the religion has yet to evolve to respond to the world outside them. Globalisation will change this and it is either the Muslims wake up and respond or they will have to move to a land of their own.

Dear hawaiichee, you are right of course. But then you are also wrong in that you are targetting your criticism to the wrong culprit. You should change the word 'Islam' for 'Muslims'. It is Muslims and not Islam that is all what you say it is.

Anyway, before we lose track, the article above I believe is about Anwar Ibrahim rather than Islam so maybe the discussion should not be hijacked. I mean, have we not discussed Islam enough? But hawaiichee, if you really insist on debating Islam I will take you on but in some other Blog, not here. Just let me know.

The trouble though, your mind is already closed and you are violently opposed to Islam, so no matter how convincingly I debate with you it will come to no purpose in the end. For example, if I win the debate and prove that Islam is not what you say it is but is actually the opposite of that, will you convert to Islam? And if you win the debate and prove Islam is everything you say it is then I will also leave Islam. Let it be an all or nothing debate. I win you become a Muslim and I lose I will leave Islam. That is how convcinced I am of Islam. Are you also convinced Islam is what you say it is to take this challenge?

Dear hawaiichee, what lost time are you talking about? Muslims take 5-10 mins during lunch time to pray. This is on their own time. Then the next prayer is after 5pm, which is on their own time as well and not office time.

Non-Muslims take 10 mins every hour for a smoking break, in particular in the west where they must walk outtside the building to smoke (so it takes 15-20 mins many times a day). Do they take a salary cut?

you should not labelled the failure of the policies regarding the 30% allocation as a "muslim problem"...it isn't...its a greed cause by a group of people from the party...corruption breeds greed and vice versa. Religion has nothing to do with the problem of today in this country. It is being used as the "tool" to fish for votes. I'm no muslim; but i do not think it would be a great idea to spit on a religion for its being manipulated by humans. Humans are the problem..not a religion. Islam is peace; only extremist who want to score points with the masses who are the least informed for their own political ends. Trust me on this...muslims and non muslims are capable of co-existing; the only problem is those that are in power that are making your day and many more a problematic one

I disagree with Ali Cordoba, rather I think the west is only exposed to muslims who practise Isalm to extremes and thus have a flawed view, the west tends to think that muslims have only one alternative and would not accept any other, hence this goes against their "democratic" beliefs. What the west truly needs is to be exposed to more muslims and then they can see the peace and beauty of this religion, dare I say that they should be exposed to more ppl like RPK

Hi RPK

You are right this is not a debate on Islam. I am sorry for the misunderstanding. We are not trying to proof which religion is right or wrong as there are many subjective reasons why we choose a religion. So I will not take you on that debate as it will not go anywhere as well.

I respect your decision as the owner of this blog and will keep the discussion to DSAI.

By the way, what about the Friday Prayers? I believe fundamentally, the Muslims still have not united with an answer that allows them to co-exist with the non Muslim world. The reason why you get responses like mine is because this article written by the above author is not well focused on DSAI but speaks about a whole lot of ideas trying to release tension and did not come to any conclusion.

Raja Petra wrote:
Dear hawaiichee, on your question of Friday prayers: the labour law says we must work 39 hours a week with an hour off for lunch. That means we work 34 hours minus lunch. Now, we work 40 hours a week with an hour off for lunch expect Friday which is 2 hours. So we still work 34 hours. No one is robbed of time because of Friday prayers.

For your information. It is haram to cheat your employer of his time. If he pays for 7 hours work then we MUST work 7 hours. If we work less whilst we are being paid for 7 hours then the salary is haram. So those Muslims who steal time to pray are commiting a sin, not getting blessings from God.

Simple.

Thanks for the clarification RPK. I wonder what better way to instill a culture of compliance to the laws in Al-Quran as well as to laws of the company. Some employers fear when their employees do as they like. Anyway, this may be some of the questions that are critical and somehow we are already facing the effects of these laws not followed or not implementation being carried out against non compliance.

Again, sorry for detracting from the topic. Now, the question related to the topic is what role will the Muslims prefer DSAI to portray. A role where DSAI champions for the cause of
Islam getting better recognition from the non Muslim world by enforcing stricter compliance of Muslim followers towards the good practices of Islam or a role where DSAI fights against the non Muslim world and ask them not to bother the Muslim world.

I have a feeling the Muslims prefer that second role of DSAI (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) and wish someone speaks out that the non Muslim world should shut up. But why not aim for a noble aim of improving the Islam image by restructuring it? Somehow, you have to do that dirty job to bring unity to the ummah and dissect away non-relevant practices. That is the whole point. I am not getting off topic.

And when it comes to distributing wealth I'm sure they must have their own formula to achieve that. So, please stop picking on one race or religion and start thinking about contributing ideas towards a morer prosperous Malaysia.

Back to the article. Anwar's motive at this time is difficult to decipher. The article itself is conflicting at times. I'm not quite sure what is the real message the author tries to convey. Is Anwar guilty of trying to bridge the West due to lack of Islamic understanding? Maybe his approach is a more diplomatic one. Learning from his ISA experience maybe using force is not the answer. Thus getting close to his subjects and have open dialog would be a wise option. He is walking on a very tight rope. He has to satisfy all concerned. Being a politician I suppose that's exactly what he is doing. Therefore, we (the supporter/voters) must be smart enough to judge the character we are voting for or giving our support for. For me I'm still waiting to see more of him and the Opposition to make statements on current issues and how they plan to tackle them. Until then i keep my fingers crossed.

Knowing that maybe the answer would be the later, I am asking further whether there needs to be more urgency to restructure the Muslim world or at least within Malaysia to portray the right image of Islam. What should DSAI do? Only the Muslims can decide.

The West and Singapore know that Anwar Ibrahim and Abdullah Badawi are people of low IQ and even idiots.

Therefore both Anwar Ibrahim and Abdullah Badawi are much favoured by the West because both these idiots can be easily influenced and manipulated by the West. Again why so ? Because these people can command leadership of the Malay Muslims in Malaysia including the ruling party.

Why doesnt the West like a Mahathir, a Chavez or a Castro ? Because not only do these people stand up for their rights but they are shrewd and hihgly intelligent. Other Third World leaders in this category are Ahmedinajad of Iran, Gaddafi of Libya and Sadam of Iraq.

We are not debating the morals of these folks - just the fact that they were intelligent individuals in their own right.

So when the West comes across simpletons like a Badawi or an Anwar Ibrahim, they build them up. Manu Baskaran of Singapore has sung high praises for Badawi's economic stewardship of Malaysia.

Anwar Ibrahim was awarded a visiting fellowship / professorship at Cambridge and George Washington. Even retired Mat Salleh presidents and prime ministers have never been honored thus. These are just ploys to maintain Anwar's image - just in case he gets a second crack at the PM's post.

The Malays were conned by Abdullah Badawi by his baca doa, leading the prayers at his mothers funeral etc etc. The Malays seem to like the religious crap.

The Malays were conned by Anwar Ibrahim's religious crap, his madani and other rubbish. He was something else at night. The West knew this very well. The CIA knew of his partying aboard yachts in New York and elsewhere. They knew his habits very well.

Just like now the CIA knows very well of Kamaluddin Abdullah's complicity in the SCOMI scandal. They also know about Kamaluddin's recent cheating scandal involving a London bank that got the Chairman of the London bank flying down to KL for an emergency meeting with the PM - Kamaludin's father.

They know all this. The more stupid you are, the more vices you have, the more you steal, the more the West will praise you and nurture you - especially when you are an Islamic leader.

When you are smart, clean and tidy they really hate you. They cannot manipulate you any more.

Anwar is an idiot. People who know him say he is a munafik or hypocrite. Anwar knows as much about Islam as a toad would know about baking a cheese cake.

The West still has hopes for him because they can see that Abdullah Badawi will not last long in power. They are looking beyond Abdullah.

They dont see Najib. They cant see anyone else although there is someone else. Hence they are still 'bela' Anwar - just in case.

The greatest hope here is that Anwar Ibrahim gets to read such articles and realize that, probably, he is not doing the right thing.

In 1997 an article in a London based newsletter called Africa Confidential suggested that Malaysia's economy was bound to fall for some reasons. It fell with the currency nose diving to its lowest ebb.

Then in 1998, March as I remember it, I wrote an analysis on the situation in the UMNO. To me it was clear that Anwar Ibrahim would be the scapegoat for the troubles the country was going through. Hence in the article, my advise to the former Finance Minister was to either leave his post gracefully or tip-toe to what Mahathir would do to maintain his grip on power.

My information is that Anwar did read my piece which was printed and handed to him by someone I can't reveal here. But he did not listen. It is well known that in his Ministerial days, Anwar was not that close to the press in Malaysia as he was not looking at them with favorable eyes. He had his reasons but then there is also a very good reason why some people are journalists.

The only real hope I have here - despite the negative comments from the forumwalla's is that Anwar is handed this current piece of story and he realize - am repeating myself - that the people who supported the reformasi want that Anwar back.

Whatever trauma he could have gone through in jail was felt by large sections of the Malay community in the country. Certainly by the 'average' Malays. Men and women and even children and also elderly people were crying in their hearts for the 6 years that Anwar spent in jail.

May Allah bless him and maybe he find the right path to lead his Malay-Muslim community in Malaysia and outside the country to path to righteousness.

First of all, your understanind of the article is limited. It is never the purpose of changing Islam (which cannot be done ever - so forget this idea - or to get the non-muslim word to leave the muslim world. It is about telling the West that they are hypocrites and that we Muslims know that. This whole war on terror - konon2 org Islam nak bunuh org America atau benci dgn org America atau cemburu dengan Bush (WalahuAlam what is there to benci or cemburu with this fake president?) - must end.

Anwar Ibrahim has taken the mantle of the 'negotiator' with the West. Ok fine, but then go negotiate and don't side with them! That is the issue in this debate. Why does Anwar has to rekindle on Islam, reformasi and the Muslims to give the West and their flawed systems the high five?

He should rather listen to his troops and taste the pulse of 'his' supporters before he promise to America that democracy is universal.

That is what the people would not and that will bring Anwar's downfall once again - simply put!

First I would like to keep this debate on Anwar Ibrahim. But since Haiwachee played the 'Ulema' as if he knows Islam better than us Muslims, I will have to give him a pair of slap to wake him up from his drooling.

The Quraan says no one in Islam can leave Islam. Those 'liberal' u mention that says the quraan says no such thing are either playing God or are simply unsure whether they read the Quraan or the bible? They can try to change the meaning of the Quraan but the Quraan will remain in Arabic and not in Bahasa Melayu or English. And alas for them, and for u who is playing the ignorant (which is a personality flaw indeed) the Quraan in Arabic when translated in Bahasa Melayu and in English or in Russian or even in languages you may never have heard of says clearly that apostasy is condemnable in Islam.

Next, I would like to know what is your problem with Islam? As an outsider, if you do not know you ask. You do not comment and inflame Muslims then you say you are asking. There is a difference between commenting and asking. Maybe your teachers in the chinese vernacular schools did not teach u well on that.

On the other hand, I have one question that answers all your 3 'ignorance' question on Islam's future.

What is the future of the Chinese or Tamil community in Malaysia if they do not want to fold their vernacular schools and integrate with the Malays-Muslims in the efforts to make Malays a fully Knowledge Based Education (KBE)? You will all be dead ducks and sitting bulls in the Malaysia of 2020 while the Malays have made sacrifices enough by adopting English as a medium of education!

Go and learn ok.

I have no problem with Islam. I have problems with Muslims who exhibit violence and give a poor image to Malaysia. If they can say they preace freedom of religion, tolerance, peace and diplomacy, then I will be supportive of the Islam in Malaysia. For instance, I fully support the other post in Malaysia Today entitled Hate Ideology a treat to unity by Zainah Anwar.

By the way, I am not for a vernacular Chinese school but feel that students from there who excel in all languages, will stand to gain in this global economy. Focus on that Klang illegal structure, stupid directive about festive greetings...and worst of all the Freedom to convert out of Islam ...this is Basic human rights things in M'sia.....muslim that brings a bad name to Islam at the perception of non muslim should be Obliterated like this UMNO racist followers.....one need not be educated in Islam to comment on muslim.....who the hell gave muslim the right that only muslim can judge muslim....this is a free world and if you are a hypocrate...we will drag Islam and muslim together until muslim unite to remove the hypocrate...otherwise its Islam loss rather than ours...but weak kness and $$$$ is preventing the real Islam to emerge...what we have in M'sia is truly a Racism in Islam UMNO/PAS racist terrorist communist liars CULT!!....this statement remains UNCHALLENGED!!...

Dear Mohd Nur,

Your wife has every right to freedom of religion by converting from Christianity to Islam. Can you say the same for yourself if one day you are convinced that Islam is not the religion you want to embrace anymore.I have many ex-muslim friends who were once fanatical muslims but have found true freedom finally after years of being in the religion. They have to remain anonymous because the religious group would hunt for them and force them to renounce.

Anyway, I would end the debate here and would not reply any more as this will lead to no end.

Ali Cordoba is no different from other Muslim writers and his feeling is understable. He is merely reflecting the underlying resentment Muslims have for the US and the West. Therefore, his reasoning is, to associate with the Muslim's enemy makes Anwar an enemy of the Muslims as well.
Ali's paranoia is so skewered that he he thinks democracy and human rights are Western concepts!
His feeling against the West is akin to Muslims' dislike for dogs, regardless of how wonderful this animal is.
I wish the Muslim world will have more Anwar Ibrahims to build bridges with the US and the West.
Even Mahathir, who used to condemn the US spent miilion of ringgit to meet George Bush. What has Ali to say about that?
Hatred leads us no where except to destruction.

This is an obvious piece to attack Anwar and Western ideas. What strikes me is he writer's rigour in attacking of Anwar as if he poses a threat to HIS ideas or wishes at least.

He is most contradictory in that he seems to say that Anwar pro-West stance will not lead him far but at the same time his vigorous attacks seem to suggest that Anwar pro-West stance poses a threat to his ideas. Its highly schizophrenic to me.
