SLICKER
We All Have A Plan
Hefty Records
April 20, 2004
Critically-acclaimed electronic artist Slicker (a.k.a. John Hughes) will be releasing his third album, entitled We All Have a Plan, on April 20th, 2004 via Chicago's Hefty Records. Slicker's sound has been the touchstone of Hefty's catalog, and We All Have a Plan is an amalgam of hip-hop, jazz, soul, powerhouse production, transcontinental sensibilities and organic instrumentation. It is an album whose sound effortlessly blends sonic experimentation and songcraft.
After starting Hefty Records to release his own creations with his band Bill Ding, Hughes began experimenting with electronic music, resulting in the formation of Slicker. A highly-skilled producer, Hughes released his first album, Confidence in Duber (1998), which had Alternative Press proclaiming, "John Hughes continues to be one to watch." Confidence in Duber was followed by a remix album featuring the likes of Matmos, Mice Parade, Savath+Savalas and more. He subsequently released his second album, The Latest, in 2001, in addition to scoring the Asia Argento film Scarlet Diva (2002) and contributing remixes for artists such as Phil Ranelin, Telefon Tel Aviv and The Aluminum Group.
We All Have a Plan features a number of guests -- Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison of Tribe Records, Dan Boadi, Slum Village (Capitol Records) MC Elzhi, Phat Kat and L'altra's Lindsay Anderson, who also appears on Hefty Records' critically-acclaimed release Map of What is Effortless by Telefon Tel Aviv. The album recalls the soulful music of the analog era while creating an entirely new sound for the digital future. Utilizing some of jazz, funk, Afro-beat and Motown's lost heroes, Hughes' album returns music to the timeless land of song, where it rightfully belongs.
The album's first single, "Knock Me Down Girl," will be going to radio this spring and will feature remixes by Telefon Tel Aviv and soul/pop/electronic duo Spanova.
Slicker's sound is almost stream-of-consciousness in its feel, full of everyday sounds, jarring breakdowns and electronic noisesJohn Hughes continues to be one to watch."
- Alternative Press
"If you're bored with the usual and are looking for something to really make you pay attention, look no further than Slicker." - Vice
"Consider this experiment in the definition of sound a smashing success." - Urb
"Hughes' compositions can alter the mood of any environment." - Resonance
"Slicker's [second album] The Latest is an assemblage of sounds ranging from warm, jazz-infused landscapes to breakbeats as cold as Squarepusher's other cheek."
- Gear
"Chicago's John Hughes, a.k.a. Slicker, has produced understated electronica with echoes of dub, jazz and House. Those details by themselves may be nothing new, but [his music] distinguishes itself by virtue of its carefully crafted compositions and unexpected turns." - Wire
