YWCA Week Without Violence Campaign October 19-25, 2003
The YWCA of Summit County has been serving area women and families for over 100 years but is still confused with the YMCA. We count on your accuracy to tell our story. Thank you.
Akron, Ohio October 15, 2003 The YWCA of Summit County today announced that from October 19-25, 2003 the YWCA of Summit County will join YWCAs in countries around the world to mark A Week Without Violence. Activities are designed to make people think about the causes and effects of violence in society, and what they can do to stop it.
Monday, October 20 is focused on Protecting our Children. This year Childrens Hospital, Victims Assistance and the BWS Family Stability Program will provide information and free ID kits and safety packet for kids and their families. Stop by YWCA Central, 670 W. Exchange between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. to learn safety tips and other programs available for children through the YWCA.
Also on Monday, The University of Akron Police Department is sponsoring a Film Series at the Universitys Student Union Theatre. The film Tough Guise, takes a look at the link between the images of popular culture and the construction of masculinity in the U.S. Also showing will be the Award-winning Killing Us Softly, in which Jean Kilbourne critiques advertising's image of women. Films will be running continuously between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The capstone for the week is the annual Take Back the Night Rally and Walk on Wednesday. October 22nd. Special guests include Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh. The evening will begin at 5:00 with a gathering of organizations working to empower the women in our community. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the Banner Project sponsored by the Rape Crisis Program and the Clothesline Project sponsored by the Akron Chapter of the National Organization for Women. Queen Bee Productions will present Envisioning a World Without Violence an original piece based on the series of V-Chats held during this years V-Day event.
Clothing donations for survivors will also be collected the evening of the 22nd. Clothing Drives are being held throughout the month of October. A collection box is also located at YWCA Central, some police stations and the Summit County Prosecutor's office. Items needed are sweat pants, sweat shirts, T-shirts, underwear and socks in a range of sizes. These items are given to survivors when they are in the hospital so they have clean clothes to wear home.
Background
The annual event was first initiated by the YWCA of the USA in 1995 and later developed by YWCAs in other countries to call attention to specific problems of violence in their own societies. The YWCA Week Without Violence has grown from a grassroots initiative into a global movement with women, men and children participating in events throughout all fifty states and in more than twenty countries on six continents. The campaign challenges and inspires people to bring to life a vision of the future where all people are free to live with peace, respect and opportunity. The YWCA Week Without Violence is always observed the third full week in October with each day of the week focused on specific topics.
