You don't "need" bikes at all, but if it is a crowded time on the Island, and if you are close enough to your destination to ride a bike, the MANY bike trails can make it much quicker to ride a bike than to sit in traffic. When we go in May, traffic is never an issue, but we ride anyway, because it is much more pleasant for us. But you can get anywhere you want to go without bikes.

And being a Sanibel Question Asker just gives us a chance to blather on about Sanibel without seeming obsessed. Thanks for the opportunity.
