The red algae thing is something you just can't plan on. I've been to Sanibel 4 times in the past 6 years in April and once we had to deal with it. I don't really think you can change plans or plan around it. Its just kind of luck. For accurate information you might want to check the city's site - www.mysanibel.com I've checked it once and I think what has been going on this season is not red tide but something that comes from fresh water. At any rate, it doesn't sound pleasant. I haven't paid close attention because I'm not going to San/cap this time of year.

I really don't think the stingrays are anything to worry about. I remember seeing them quite a bit on one of our trips and anytime you got near them, they go away. I also think is the luck (or bad luck) of happening to step directly on one. They move so quickly I think that would be difficult.

If Sanibel is the place you want to go - go for it and don't worry too much about these things. Check accurate sites for the red tide (or whateve it is) and make your decisions from there. Good luck and enjoy!

Re the stingrays; they swim along the bottom, and

>when the stingrays are around, and they will swim
>away. If you step down on them, they can't swim away,
>and you get stuck in the foot by their barb, which
>sticks up from the base of their tail. Shuffle, and
>you will have no problem.
