If you're planning on staying a week, I would suggest a condo. You can check with any rental agencies and most condos are gulf front but always check to make sure.
If you stay near the east end (near the lighthouse) the beach doesn't have hardly any drop off but I find the shells are usually smaller. I stay at Pointe Santo that beach has a gradual drop off and then a sand bar and shelling has always been good. The beaches further west have a bigger drop off but the shelling is excellent. With a 15 month I would stay east or near Tarpon Bay Road. Check www.cuisine-scene.com for restaurants and menus, all of Sanibel is family friendly. Most kids like the Island Cow and the Hungry Heron. We like Timbers, McT's Shrimp House, and Gramma Dot's.
When you get to the island stop at the Chamber Visitor Center where you can find menus and coupons.
