"They say you can't live without love. Tell them oxygen is more important." House submitted by Staz

The View

"Mac! When did you say that she'll be home? I've been standing at this window for two hours now. That girl is going to be grounded for a month once she gets home." Harm paced the length of the room then looked out the slit in the drapes then paced some more. He stopped and started more times than he could count. He moved to the drapes again and again and finally one more time.

Harm threw up his hands in disgust as he continued to peer through the drapes at the front walk. He had been muttering to himself the whole time. "I'll be home before 11, daddy. He is in all my advanced classes. He drives a Honda hybrid. See, he's into green." What had he been thinking to let her go out on her first unchaperoned date? He knew about 17 year old boys. Hell, he'd been one. At 17 he was getting ready for the academy. He had been to Viet Nam. He had even been shot.

His mood got progressively agitated as he let his mind drift to what might be happening with his little girl and the new boy in her life.

Mac came into the living room with a glass of milk in one hand and a book in the other. She had been ready for bed since Letterman had signed off. Trying to get Harm ready was another matter. She had been watching him all evening hoping that he would eventually settle down. She should have known better. His over-protective testosterone laden father genes had reached a critical level around 11:00 pm. And she had reached her own max with him. She placed the items on the lamp table by the sofa and arranged herself in the corner within easy reach of the phone.

"Harm, I told you that I gave her permission to stay out to 1:00 am. You need to listen to me a little more closely." Mac let the exasperation in her voice come through in her words. His listening skills still lacked when it came matters pertaining to their daughter. He could be stubborn and obstinate but he eventually came around.

Mac patted the cushion beside her as she arranged herself in a more comfortable position.

"Honey, come on over here and sit. She will get in when she gets in. Pacing the floor or peeking out of the front drapes like a CIA agent won't get her here any sooner."

Mac gave Harm one of her 'come hither' smiles that always worked when he was stressed. Harm glanced over and saw the smile. He came over to the sofa and sat down next to her. He laid back his head and stretched out his arms along the back of the sofa. Mac leaned into his shoulder then stretched up to his cheek, giving him a peck on the cheek.

"You are too good for me." He turned his head so that he kiss her hair. "This wasn't how it was suppose to turn out. She was suppose to have my looks and your brains."

"Why, Harmon Rabb Jr.! What are you saying about our little girl? Of course she has my brains but she has a really large dose of the adventurer in her. You're the one that took her up in Sarah before she could even walk." Mac looked at Harm, mocking him to his face. She had poked him in the chest playfully.

"True, what you say is true but who got her a set of Marine cammies before she got her christening dress? Who told her all those stories about 'Batman & Robin?" He poked her right back but a little more forcefully than she was expecting. As she slid onto the arm of the sofa, Harm pulled her down and under him with a quick maneuver.

"Get off me, flyboy." Mac pushed at his chest but not very hard. If some necking was going to happen, then she was all prepared for it. That would certainly take his mind off of their daughter and her tardiness.

"No, ninja-girl. I have you in my clutches now. I won't let you go without paying the price. Give me a kiss!" Harm leaned down and put himself into the kiss.

Neither parent heard the front door open. Quietly, their daughter tiptoed into the hallway. She placed her wrap and keys on the hall table trying to be as silent as possible. As she walked further into the hallway, she spied the glass of milk on the lamp table by the sofa in the living room.

She stepped closer to the lamp table, intending to get the milk and shut off the light. Her eyes got as big as saucers when she saw her parents engaged in a little more than necking but not quite 'going all the way' either.

After what seemed an eternity, Mac and Harm came up for air.

"4 minutes, 37 seconds Not bad for two old married people." She stated in too cheerful voice as far as Harm was concerned.

Before he could speak, Mac looked over at their daughter. Maybe it was time to give some sage words of wisdom concerning love. "They say you can't live without love." The words just popped out of her mouth before Mac could really perforce them.

"Mom, tell them oxygen is more important." With this parting shot she turned on her heels to go up to bed.

Mac knew that the view for a sixteen year old was a whole lot different than the view that she and Harm had. She just hoped that their daughter would find the same view that they had found. Love or oxygen? It wasn't really a hard choice. Give them love everytime!!!

[> Fun story...(inside) -- Katiegirl, 23:37:39 06/19/08 Thu [1]

My eldest is doing a crash course in puberty at school at the moment, and I have to say that occasionally I feel sorry for the teachers. He has been through two childbirths with me.
