I have a PERMANENT and EXPENSIVE reminder of this game. I listened to it on a short-wave radio set with the volume turned low. The reason being that it was still early morning in Riverside California. Oh--and I was in my then girlfriend's room in the student accomodation of the University of California, Riverside, where she was completing a physics Ph D. My girlfriend was from Peru, and didn't have a bloody clue what the game was all about. I found later that the two female Korean students the other side of the thin partition wall thought that the muffled squawks and excitement was some sort of orgy! Permanent and expensive? Well, I was so carried away by a Welsh win at Twickenham that in a wave of euphoria I asked the girl to marry me.
There was a sequel to this. I listened to the game against Ireland--the Triple Crown clincher, in the same bedroom. Some daft bastard of a student, making a crafty early morning exit, dropped a lighted cigarette into a waste paper bin. Fair-sized fire and big panic. We ignored the shouts to leave the building, until half a dozen girls burst in and virtually dragged us out of bed. Rosa, my wife-to-be, kept explaining that we were engaged, so it wasn't a violation of "moral ethics" [Catholic upbringing] Me--I'm standing outside in my underwear, trying to get the college fire men to understand that my radio was still inside, and the bloody game wasn't over.
The moral? Never listen to Wales win a game against England whilst in bed with a woman 20 years younger than you. If we win--you might have to marry her. [I'm not complaining!!!]
