Standing, sitting,
Stuck in the middle,
Surrounded by walls,
Dwarfing with their size.
Stand humbly beneath
The towers.
The walls hide, conceal.
Protect. Distort
Walls of circus mirrors
That reflect wavy, false images.
Those that look in
See thousands of mirror people,
Never knowing the true me.

I, in return, live in the box.
No way out. No way in.
Protected by layer upon layer of
Fakeness. Mirrors masked by other mirrors.
Me, hidden from the world.
Acts I design to protect.

Stuck in the middle,
Unable to get out.
Glass walls made of cement.
Wrecking balls not strong enough
To ruin and destroy.
Smooth, faultless glass,
Slippery to climb, unbreakable.

Look in to see a
Clownish ape, performing to make you happy.
Not searching for its own pleasure.
Captive ape, locked up
For its own safety.
Lonely despite the many
Friends and acquaintances who gawk
As they watch amused.
An imprisoned ape
Yearns for the forest,
To be free and running loose.
