So, how does this actually work? How do we get to a point where we know our thinking is not leading us into self sabotage? How do we make that work without the aid of a re-hab interview? We learned a lot at SSH about changing our thinking and we have some tools now to work with. Here are some reminders and maybe a few new suggestions to help understand our thought processes and how to change them to help serve us in our endeavors better.

For a better understanding: "All day long you carry on a mental conversation with yourself. Psychologists estimate we think up to 60,000 thoughts a day and that 98% of these thoughts are the same ones we had yesterday- most of them negative. In a year, that's almost 22 million thoughts! If Madison Avenue giants can influence your subconscious mind to make a buying decision by repeating an ad a mere 2 dozen times (they can), then just imagine the impact that millions of your own thought commands have on influencing your subconscious mind- it's staggering!"

So, "Like the soil, your subconscious mind is totally impartial- it doesn't discriminate. In it will grow whatever seeds you plant there or 'allow to be planted there.' Many people have perfectly good intentions, but they unwittingly allow their subconscious to work against themselves by focusing on what they don't want....Loiuse Hay reminds us, "The more you dwell on what you don't want, the more of it you create." Others simply pay no attention to their thoughts whatsoever, and like a garden that's neglected, soon enough, weeds start growing. Eventually the weeds take over your garden."

And, "Because of the way your subconscious works, it's extremely important for you to focus all your thoughts on what you want to achieve, not on what you want to avoid. This is not mere semantics; it's a very important distinction. If I ask you to close your eyes and 'not' to think about monkeys, you'll (mentally) see monkeys everywhere. You can't NOT think about something! You either think about something or you don't. And you always move toward what you think about the most, regardless of whether it's positive or negative."

Remember Pat's lecture where he says he doesn't think of himself as an addict anymore and will not place the label "alcoholic" on himself? It's occurred to me that SSH is one of the only programs that introduces the idea to stop thinking of yourself as an alcoholic/drug addict. Given the above author's philosophy this would hold truth to it. If you are continually thinking about being an addict then you surely are one, because that's what you think yourself to be. Also, if there is too much focus on what you don't want, like not drinking, then you are, in fact, thinking about drinking all the time. On the other hand, if you are telling yourself you are something positive instead, and the thought does not enter your mind that you are an addict then you become what it is you are telling yourself you are. For instance, if instead of telling yourself you are/are not an alcoholic/drug addict, you are telling yourself you are a great person/artist/writer/golfer/parent/communicator/builder/thinker/house keeper/farmer/mathematician, etc. you are that, and not what you constantly tell yourself you are/are not. Does that make sense? So, it works two ways. By telling yourself you are an addict you are reinforcing the idea behind that thought. By telling yourself all the time I am not going to think about drugs you are, in fact, thinking about drugs and those thoughts still stay with you. The idea then is to think about what you are- the positive things, and what you want. And as you keep feeding your subconscious mind the positive thoughts about what you are, you are re-enforcing and re-programming your brain to think that way, and then you become what you think.

So, this author states, "...it's important for you to take conscious control over your mental dialogue and program your brain with positive goals.
Fortunately, the one thing you always have 100% control over is your thoughts. If you want to be successful in...any endeavor in life, you must master your communication with yourself. You must take charge of your self-talk, "police" your thinking, and literally re-program your brain for success. If you've cluttered your mind with a life time of "Stinkin' thinkin'", this may be challenging at first. It will take time to erase old programming, but it can be done."

We've all had a bit of education now on re-programming our brains, and how much that can allow us to accomplish. With SSH we were given that boost, and those tools that allowed us to see, in a short period of time, how powerful that is. The next task, and maybe the task of the rest of our lives, is to continue to re-program our brains, using our thoughts, in order to continue on with the success we had there.
