How would you compare your competition to that of other states? Does a young lady who is NOT from Hawaii have a decent chance in your state? My "best pageant friend" just got accepted to a university in Hawaii and wants to compete. Thanks!

Just wanted to share my opinion on picking the judges for The Miss Hawaii Pageant. Everyone knows that hawaii is known for hula and tahitian. It is our culture. A lot of girls spend there life learning the correct steps and movements of the hula and tahitian. I would have hoped that they would have had a least 1 judge that had the expertise in both fields so that the girls could be judged properly. I feel the Miss Hawaii Organization should take a look at all of the contestants that are in the pageant see what types of talent they bring and then pick the judges accordingly. I just know there were 7 hulas and 2 tahitian dancers but not one real qualified judge. The judges were qualified in all other areas except that. Hopefully that will change next year.

Author:

[ Edit | View ]

Date Posted: 21:13:06 01/02/09 Fri

The show airs at 10 pm if you have Oceanic Cable or 5 pm with Direct TV.

Each one-hour episode, hosted by Tyler Harcott, will find the contestants living on the majestic Queen Mary ocean liner and navigating through a series of team and individual competitions that will help them prepare for the pageant and prove they have what it takes to be a modern-day Miss America. Through it all, viewers at home get to know the girls, and ultimately have a hand in judging four contestants into the pageant.
"Miss America continues to evolve to reflect today's young woman, and remains incredibly forward-thinking as it develops a new generation of intelligent, thoughtful, and passionate contestants," said Art McMaster, President/CEO of the Miss America Organization.
The Gold Sash
Joining Tyler will be two consultants -- Kym Douglas and Antthony Mark Hankins -- who guide the women through their experience and decide who is best prepared to become 2009's Miss America. Through the challenges, the 52 contestants are expected to push their personal limits in an effort to win a gold sash, possibly advancing them into the top 15 at the Miss America pageant, which airs on TLC live from Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 24.
Voting, which begins after the 15 gold-sash finalists are selected, will be conducted here at TLC.com/MissAmerica and via text messaging.
"For the first time ever, America has the chance to be a judge and select four of the contestants they think deserves to make it into the pageant," explains Brent Zacky, VP of Development at TLC. "By giving viewers the chance to get to know the girls during Countdown to the Crown, we are confident four great contestants will take the stage in January to compete for the Miss America title."
The Challenges
Each week's episode welcomes a guest consultant who spotlights one of the key pillars that create a successful Miss America contestant. These consultants also have a hand in selecting that week's gold sash winner.
Episode 1: premieres January 2, 2009 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT)
Guest consultant: Gretchen Carlson, Miss America 1989 and host on Fox Network's Fox and Friends.
Team Challenge: Quest for the Crown, a scavenger-style race through the ship.
Individual Challenge: Pitch Perfect. The table's set to determine the girls' ability to remain composed, form an argument and listen as well as she speaks.
Episode 2: premieres January 9, 2009 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT)
Guest consultant: Shakara Ledard, renowned supermodel
Team Challenge: Fitness First Obstacle Course -- the teams face off in a fun endurance race to the end.
Individual Challenge: Cover Girls. Which girl has mastered her poise and confidence on the runway?
Episode 3: premieres January 16, 2009 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT)
Guest Consultant: Clinton Kelly, from TLC's What Not to Wear. Clinton will also reprise his role as a special correspondent for the Miss America pageant.
Team Challenge: Miss American Shopper. Will it be retail rivalry when each team will have to share one shopping budget?
Individual Challenge: Little Black Dress returns with a fashion-forward eye on personal style and resourcefulness.
Episode 4: premieres January 23, 2009 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT)
Guest Consultant: Susan Powell, Miss America 1981
Team Challenge: Miss America Talent Show. It's a talent showdown as the teams perfect a routine and compete against each other.
Individual Challenge: Rock the Runway, where all of the planning pays off in their final chance to secure a sash.

STUART, Fla. A student at a Florida school has been arrested after authorities said he was "passing gas" and turning off his classmates' computers. According to a report released Friday by the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the 13-year-old boy "continually disrupted his classroom environment" by intentionally breaking wind. He then shut off some computers other students were using.

The Spectrum Junior-Senior High School was arrested Nov. 4.

A school resource officer placed the boy under arrest after he confessed about his behavior, according to the report. He was charged with disruption of school function and released to his mother.

Whoever it is who is posting horrible things about some of the girls (some of the SWEETEST girls might i add)... & please don't think that you're ANNONYMOUS pal.. =] it needs to stop right now.

it doesn't hurt anyone's feelings, these girls know what they're signing up for.. they've been trained to deal with tough criticism.. but belittling them & saying things like "sucking gay dick" just puts a bad view on the entire STATE and esp on YOURSELF.

Hawaii needs to keep it's reputation of having beautiful talented and smart girls, if we keep putting them down, some future contestants might hesitate to compete & then what if the entire program becomes extinct for our beautiful state?

I think it's rather sad actually, and pretty lame and pathetic and childish of people to waste their time & everyone else's flooding the message boards with useless CRAP. =[ get a life.. obviously the girls who you're bashing have something you want, and can't have. deal with it. life isn't fair, no one's perfect, esp you.. so get over it. putting people down, as i was taught in the third grade is a mechanism to make yourself feel better for your own self image problems.. it's the same thing as stealing kids lunch money.. move on. go back to elementary where it was okay to call names & act like a child.. because you know.. that's where children tend to be.. at elementary schools.

I think that's exactly where you belong.

So let's just all agree to stop this nonsense & all just be supportive of the girls (past, present, & future) and their aspirations & goals no matter what they may be. It takes a lot of guts and self confidence to get up on that stage and bear your soul like that. I don't see YOU doing that KIMO.

ALOHA!

As a past competitor of Nicoles, I'd just like to say that she is an absolutely amazing woman. Not only is she beautiful on the outside, but she has a heart of pure gold. If there is anyone who exemplifies the aloha spirit it is without a doubt her. She is all about really making the world a better place and I have no doubt that she has embraced Hawaii as her own aina and will now represent Hawaii and its kanaka (people) flawlessly. She loves the Hawaiian culture and will do everything she can to reach out to the kamaaina of the islands. The judges, no doubt, saw her brilliance and genuine spirit and hopefully hawaii will embrace her and let her reign as the lovely elegant miss hawaii i know she'll be. We're all rooting for ya Nicole. We love you lots and are so proud of you! You deserve this more than anyone knows!!

OK, now that both sides have vented their feelings--let's take a look at the real issue here. Both the winner and first runner-up were great candidates for Miss Hawaii from the standpoint of being competitive at Miss America (and we've ALL seen that Miss America is NOT always the greatest singer, dancer, etc). Realistically, the results probably came down to the interview, physical beauty (both were preliminary swim suit winners) and how consistent the girl was during the competition (one was more consistent than the other). Clearly both the winner and first runner up did well in interview or they would have been scored lower. Having said that, it's perfectly understandable to be concerned about having a Miss Hawaii who isn't "local". How can she possibly have the kind of "heart" for the job needed when her "home" state isn't even really her home? Over the years the Miss Hawaii organization has lost many sponsors and has suffered the same lack of interest that state pageants across the country have seen. Only a girl who has spent years in the local system and grown up in Hawaii would really understand that. We need a Miss Hawaii who isn't just interested in winning Miss America (only a 1 in 52 chance there) but also in bettering the Miss Hawaii program through her efforts as only she can do. Having said that, it's a fact that "state hoppers" exist across the country in the Miss America Organization and are quite common place. Hawaii just happened to become a victim to this in 2008. Don't blame Nicole at all for seeking a state where she had a better chance at winning if she had the means and opportunity to do so. Great strategy and it worked. I thought it was very sad to see her standing alone on the stage at the end wearing only one lei (vs being honored with so many leis the girl can barely see as is local tradition. Clearly the local audience did not embrace her at all). Hawaii will just have to wait for the girl who really has a heart for the job, and is not just interested in winning the crown.

Hi all,

I am a little shocked to see how strong and rude (there's no other way to characterize) these posts are to the new Miss Hawaii.

I have known Nicole for three years now, and we competed with each other twice at Miss California. She is the epitome of a class act, and literally there is not one other fellow contestant that she has been with in the times she competed for Miss California that would say a negative thing about her.

She is beautiful, classy, and will represent Hawaii with all her heart. When she competes, she never disrespects others and I know she is grateful for all the support she has. Please show her your respect as well.

She clearly qualified to compete, and competed well in front of a panel of certified judges who picked her. We have had many girls compete in California that are from different states (and won) and no one would spit such mean thoughts about a new state titleholder.

Good Luck Nicole at Miss America!

Nicole,

I am so proud of you. You are very deserving of the title. You have grown as a woman over the years and Hawaii is very lucky to have such an intelligent and classy woman as their representative.

Do not listen to the negative remarks of bitter people who have nothing better to do than bash on you.

Hold onto the positive comments and cherish them. You will be a great Miss Hawaii. Keep your head up and a smile on your face.

Good Luck at Miss America.

Love - A Proud Supporter

P.S. I am not a close friend or family member of Nicoles.

What you may or may not realize is - the judges in the Miss Hawaii pageant ARE looking for the next Miss America, not the best "local" girl to represent the soul of Hawaii, to be a Miss Hawaii. The state pagents are merely a stepping stone to Miss America.

Maybe instead of wasting so much time ridiculing this year's winner, those of you on this board should offer some help to contestants as they prepare for next year. Nicole may not have been everyone's favorite, but the fact is that she was consistently above average in every category. While her talent wasn't the best, there were others in the top 10 that would have been laughed off the stage at Miss America--and she certainly was not one of them.

And as far as being a "state-hopper" . . . if someone can come in from another state and win your pageant on their first try . . . I think it speaks more about the caliber of the competition here than about anything else.

At any rate, Nicole seems like a very nice girl and I'm sure she would appreciate your support. You should be flattered that she loves Hawaii and the organization enough to move here and be a part of it.
