Subject: GFD Question #16: How are Trevor's and Jenna's extras different from each other?
In reply to: Comicality 's message, "GFD Questions On Thursdays" on Thu January 22, 2009 01:24:26

Both extras seem very similar, but they're really not. What Trevor does is read and recognize 'desires'. It's not like mind reading, because it's not that acute or exact. But he can easily tell what people really want and what their motivations are (in a vague sense). When using it, he can figure out exactly what people want, even if they try to hide it. This is why, earlier in the story, he can still feel Taryn's affection to him, as well as Justin's attraction to him, even when they're trying to avoid him altogether.

In one of the earlier chapters, Justin looks into Trevor's past as a human being, and discovers a painful incident that eventually led to him having this extra. Where Trevor came on to someone who he thought felt the same way. And was not only rejected and heartbroken, but outed to the entire school. His extra manifested from a need to know ahead of time what people 'really' want as opposed to making an educated guess based on their words or actions alone.

As for Jenna, what she does is read and adopt their 'emotions'. For example, if Justin is angry, she'll get angry just from being around him. If someone is sad, she'll be sad as well. She won't know the cause or the reason for the emotion, but she will suddenly be affected by it, often beyond her contol. Jenna has also been known to pass her own feelings and emotions onto the others around her. So if she gets scared, that fear will transmit to everyone around her. So it can be a lot more unstable.
Jenna's extra can spin out of control from time to time, causing huge unpredictable bursts of emotion that even SHE isn't ready for. As much as she tries to control it and remain balanced, it's the added emotional input of the people around her that keeps it so unstable. Her extra was produced by a major heartbreak right before her crossover, where someone she trusted took her away from home and attempted to sell her into prostitution. Something about that emotional impact on her and that betrayal, created a very strong extra in her indeed. And her and Dion were always such a perfect match when she first crossed over, because Dion could shut his emotions down. Therefore, they could be close to one another without Dion's emotions effecting Jenna, and without Jenna's empath abilities affecting Dion.

Both extras are a LITTLE similar...but not as much as people may think. Jenna's and Trevor's personalities are like night and day, and their extras come from different circumstances. So that's how it differentiates. Cool?
