Maybe during puberty a certain hormone or something is released into the bloodstream, and brought on by a high stress level, changes start to happen? Gradually.. of course.

I don't know, I don't really follow the vampire lore, so I'm not sure if it's ever mentioned.. if not we can create one here.

Imagine having THAT talk with your kid. "Listen.. Billy... I'm not really your father. Your mom got frisky with an undead and hey, 9 months later you appeared. We love you just as much as the other children.. mainly because we don't want you to feed on us."

Imagine finding that out.. I mean I'm sure some would be happy, but here's the kicker.. the kid doesn't have a choice. He'd have to leave his friends, his life, HEY! What if he has a great life, he didn't choose this, it's thrust upon him.. I think a great backstory could be born from that.

Just a thought
