Michael R. Mellen, 46, of Northbridge, died Thurs. Aug. 25, 2011 in Hubbard Hospital, Webster. He was the husband of Michelle L. (Methe) Mellen.

Mr. Mellen was a Captain in the Correctional Officers Service for 22 years for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts serving at the Souza Baranowski Maximum Security Facility in Shirley retiring in 2010.

Mr. Mellen was born May 25, 1965 in Westfield the son of Richard H. and Shirley H. (Hardy) Mellen of Uxbridge. He had been a resident of Westfield before moving to Northbridge 20 years ago. Michael was a graduate of Westfield High School, Class of 1983, Worcester Academy, Class of 1984 and UMASS Dartmouth, Class of 1988.

He enjoyed vacationing in Maine, Florida and playing golf. He loved baseball and coached Little League Baseball in Northbridge for many years.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one daughter, Bryanna M. Mellen and one son, Michael C. Mellen both of Northbridge; his maternal grandmother, Marion P. (Breen) Hardy of Whitinsville; one sister, Bonnie L. and her husband Scott Dryden of Hopkinton; one aunt, Helen Mellen of Naples, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and burial will be private. Visiting hours will be Friday, Sept. 2, 2011 from 10:30 – 1:30 PM in the BUMA FUNERAL HOME, 480 Church St., Whitinsville, MA 01588.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to be made to the Mellen Children's Fund, C/O UniBank, 25 North Main St., Uxbridge, MA 01569.
