Date Posted: 10:36:07 08/13/10 Fri What exactly is a refereed journal? A refereed journal is a periodical that contains articles that have been evaluated by an expert in the field. Those scholarly journals are only published once they have passed through the review process. The review process is also known as peer-review, and it involves a critical inspection or examination, to guarantee that the information in an academic journal is of the highest quality. For this process to take place it requires a community of experts in a certain field who are qualified to perform an impartial review. To determine if a journal is peer-reviewed or not, one may look at the journal itself and search at the editorial statement for references to the peer review process (this information is usually located in the first pages or at the end of the journal). Other way of ensuring if the journal has been submitted trough the review process, is to look up the journal in Ulrich’s Periodical Directory, to find out whether the journal is refereed.
