Subject: Students not to smart

Imagine not knowing the difference between legal and illegal immigrants. LOL

We are students in Mr. Lagan's ESL U.S. History I class at Framingham High School. We have been learning about immigration in the 1840s and comparing that period to immigration today. We have found many similarities. For example, the Irish who escaped the potato famine were criticized for being dirty, poor and not wanting to embrace American culture. That is a similar reaction to people such as Framingham's CCFILE, who criticize Brazilians in the same manner.

The truth is that immigrants in the past did much of the work that Americans themselves did not want to do. The Irish built the canals and railroads because it was the hardest work and Americans did not want to do it. Immigrants today are the same way.

In addition, people who criticize immigration today do not recognize the cultural and economic benefits immigrants bring. How many people know, for instance, that the hamburger, which is an "American" food, or the Christmas tree, came from German immigrants in the 1840s? In the same way, immigrants have revitalized downtown Framingham.

Before criticizing immigrants, learn your history.

MR. LAGAN'S STUDENTS,
