Well I for one would much rather you went up to N. Alberta every year to make your fortunes rather than add more industry to this island. Why does everyone seem to think that they are entitled to move to Cortes and immediately be able to find great employment and all the services ? It's this kind of thinking that is destroying this island. And why should we let a pushy guy who doesn't even live on Cortes access to a big chunk of pristine beach to set up an unproven industry ??? So you can make a living ? Not if I can help it.
You can't use a shovel to harvest Geoducks at 30 feet under. The method used is a high pressure nozzel which blasts away the silt, sand and anything and everything living in it.
And you said "Before we can decide whether too much is taken we need to understand why it was allocated (by the community) in our OCP. The simple answer is local people need earnings and the community needs enough total earnings to support the local economy - stores, restaurants, schools, community halls, fire halls, the medical centre, the ferry, roads, post offices and everything else. Individuals need enough income to pay at least basic living expenses, which includes the things we constantly freek out about whenever they go up. If we had sufficient earnings there would be a lot less problem from rising costs."
The truth is that homeowners are being gouged more every year in property taxes to pay for what most consider declining services. The roads have gone downhill since road service was privatized years ago. And most people don't buy their groceries on the island. They wait until they go to C. River to the superstore. A post office will survive on Cortes no matter what the tax base. And what do renters pay to support all these "services" you talk about ? Virtually nothing. They help pay some landlord's mortgages, that's all. Your arguments have little to do with the argument for Geoduck farms. If you work in N. Alberta or elsewhere treeplanting or w.h.y. it amounts to the same thing. There is no way that any more of the shoreline should be given away for shellfish leases especially Geoducks. It has nothing at all to do with the food supply. There's abundant food whether there are shellfish leases or not. I know that you are speaking for the shellfish industry which has no upper limit to their wants and demands. I think we should slow down and veto any application for Geoduck leases especially by those who don't even live on Cortes but have no problem threatening Cortesians with litigation.....
