US will use nuclear deterrent to protect S.Korea

The US has reaffirmed that it will use its nuclear deterrent to protect South Korea from the North.
美國已再次保證它將使用核威攝 保護南韓免於北韓威脅
US Defense Undersecretary Michele Flournoy made the remark to reporters on Friday following talks in Seoul with South Korean Defense Minister Lee Sang Hee.
美國國防部次長麥可芙蘿尼在週五於與南韓國防部長李先生晤談後 向記者做此聲明
Flournoy was in Seoul after visiting China and Japan.

She said the US policy of protecting South Korea using nuclear deterrence remains unchanged from when the 2 countries entered into an alliance. Her comments echoed what was confirmed at the recent US-South Korea summit meeting.

Referring to her earlier talks with senior Chinese defense officials in Beijing, Flournoy said she had not been able to develop a common strategy with the Chinese to prevent North Korea's provocations.

Her comments suggest that China remains so cautious about carrying out inspections of North Korean cargo ships based on the recent UN Security Council resolution that the US and China could not hammer out their differences.

Flournoy said the US intends to increase pressure on North Korea using cargo inspections and other measures in accordance with the Security Council resolution.
