PART #35

The next morning Cassie flew back to Atlanta. Boudreau drove her to the airport, and told her he could hardly bear for her to leave again. She looked up into his eyes and said, “Boudreau, the time is getting shorter each day. It won’t be long, and we will be together for the rest of our lives.” Boudreau said, “Cassie, that can’t happen too soon for me.” They embraced, and it seemed like part of his breath was taken when he saw her walk away from him.

Boudreau drove away from the airpor, and into the downtown area. He wanted to pick up a couple books at the bookstore, and check out some jewelry for Cassie to wear with her wedding gown. He parked the car outside the mall, and noticed Orvita’s BMW in the parking lot. He wondered if he would have the pleasure of meeting up with her somewhere in the mall. Today, he hoped he would meet up with her for he had decided he was going to tell her he knew what she did at the restaurant when the four of them got together for lunch.

Boudreau wandered into the bookstore, and picked up the books he had ordered. One of the books was about the technique of raising hybrid roses, and the other one was the latest cookbook by his favorite chef from New Orleans. Boudreau was fond of good food, and enjoyed cooking. He would try out some of these recipes on Cassie the next time she came to see him.

When Boudreau walked into Joseph’s jewelry store, there stood Orvita, large as life looking at some diamond and emerald earrings. He overheard Joseph telling her the cost was five thousand dollars. Boudreau caught the sheer excitement in her eyes when she heard the price. He had never seen anyone who was so consumed by spending money as this woman was.

He kept quiet waiting to see if she purchased the earrings, which she did. He could see she was almost giddy. She was telling Joseph that her husband wanted her to have nice things, so she knew he would love them when he saw them. Boudreau thought, “I just bet Clem would be happy she just laid down five thousand dollars for a pair of diamond and emerald earrings.

He quietly walked up behind Orvita, and waited for her to turn around. She wrote out a check to Joseph, then turned around to walk out. She jumped when she saw Boudreau standing there. She stammered somewhat as she said, “Oooh my goodness, Boudreau, you startled me. I didn’t know you were there.” Boudreau smiled and said, “I have been here long enough to watch you purchase some very lovely earrings.”

Boudreau thought, “Clem must have returned the checkbook to her. Evidently she had him fooled into believing she had changed dramatically.” He said, “Orvita, have you got a minute? I would love to visit with you.” He sensed that Orvita was very uncomfortable. She said, “Is this really necessary, I am in such a hurry.” He smiled at her; and said, “Orvita, I promise you I will only keep you a minute.” “Well, all right, if you must,” she said. Boudreau positioned himself where he could get the full view of her face; and then said, “Orvita, I know what you did at the restaurant when the four of us got together for lunch.” Orvita said, “I really don’t know what you mean, Boudreau.”

Boudreau began laughing just a bit; and said, “Oh come now Orvita, I know you helped that waiter drop the tray when you tripped him with your foot.” Actually, I was wondering how Clem felt about you tripping the waiter? What did he have to say about that?”

Orvita was practically gasping for breath by that time. She was fanning herself; and saying, “Oh gracious Boudreau, you will have to excuse me, but I really need to get some fresh air.” She turned to walk off, and left Boudreau standing there smiling from ear to ear. “Ahh, score one for the good guys,” he thought. “I hope she perspires a lot whenever she thinks of me knowing what she did, and then wondering if and when I will be sharing that news with Clem.”

Orvita jumped into her BMW and drove away. Boudreau or Cassie must have seen her trip the waiter. She had tried to be so quick and discreet about it; she had thought no one saw. She didn’t even think the waiter realized he had been tripped. She was having a bad run of luck. If Clem found out she had tripped the waiter, it would mean packing the bags and leaving for her. Could nothing go right in her life anymore? If Clem got wind of this, he would realize she had not changed, merely deceived him into thinking she had changed.

To be continued...
