PART #36

By the time Orvita drove into their garage at home she was in a real funk. Lately it had seemed nothing had been going right. Things were getting all turned upside down in her life. She wondered what it was that prompted Clem, after all these years, to want her to change completely. They had been married fifteen years; he hadn’t complained before. The more she thought about it, the more she became convinced this was all Cassie’s fault. He was fine until that woman came to town. Orvita’s lip curled in bitterness when she thought of Cassie. Why did Miss Perfect have to come, and ruin her life? She carried her package from Joseph’s Jewelry store into the house, and locked it away in her jewelry vault. There was no need of showing those earrings to Clem at this point. There would be time for that later.

She wondered if Boudreau had talked with Clem in the afternoon about her tripping the waiter. She thought of the incident in Joseph’s. She could see the mocking face of Boudreau making sure she knew he knew. Ohhh, she could just scream. Boudreau and Cassie were a constant source of irritation to her. She knew if Boudreau knew about the tripping, then Cassie would also have to know. How long would it be before they told Clem? Boudreau had spoken to her about this knowledge for a reason. “He as going to use this information as leverage against me,” she thought.

Orvita was beginning to feel like a noose was tightening around her neck. Was it coming down to the point where she was going to have to change? She knew King Daddy had advised her to change for her own sake. Things were getting pretty scary. She knew she did not want to have to move out of her home. She was convinced that would happen if Clem found out she had been deceiving him. She paced the floor like a caged animal trying to decide what she was going to do. She knew she didn’t want to have to change her whole life because of one blond headed, perfect size-six figure, fair skinned woman from Atlanta. She had tried to break up that relationship, and ended up coming close to breaking up her own marital relationship. There had to be something that could fix all this mess.

While she was pacing the floor, the door opened, and Clem came strolling into the house. “Hi Orvita, I’m home,” he said. She looked at her watch, and realized she had been pacing the floor for awhile. He came up the stairs and into their bedroom where Orvita had been pacing. He smiled, walked over to her, and gathered her up in his arms, and gave her a kiss. “So, what have you been doing this afternoon?” he asked. Immediately Orvita wondered what he had heard. “Why do you ask?” she said. “Oh, no reason in particular, I just wondered,” he remarked. Orvita let out a sigh and thought, “Ahhh, that’s good, he doesn’t know anything.”

Clem said, “Oh, I ran into Boudreau this afternoon. He said he had seen you in Joseph’s.” “Is that all he said?” asked Orvita. “He said he had chatted with you for a few moments.” I don’t think he didn’t say anything else. We did make a dinner appointment for this evening. He said he would like to get together with us. We are to meet him at Henshaw’s at 7:00 P.M.

Orvita’s mind was racing when Clem said that. She now figured that Boudreau wanted her to be present when he told Clem about the tripping incident. She had to come up with something fast, or this would be it for her. She finally decided she would have to tell Clem about the incident, but she would tell him in her own way.
She got a pained expression on her face, and tears welled up in her eyes. Clem saw the tears and said, “Baby, what’s the problem?” She said with a sniff, “I have to tell you something, and I don’t know how to do it.”

Clem took her in his arms again, and said, “Sweetheart, just tell me. Don’t you know you can tell me anything?” Orvita grabbed a tissue; and sniffed some more, then said, “I did a terrible thing.” Clem, with a look of concern on his face, said, “What did you do?” She started to cry at that point; and said, “I have to tell you the waiter tripped over my feet the other day. I didn’t tell you for I was afraid you would be angry with me.” Clem looked at her and said, “Orvita, you were the one who was critical of the waiter’s clumsiness.” She wailed, “I know I criticized the waiter, but I also knew how badly it would look if I were the one who caused the spill. Cassie would think I did it deliberately.”

Clem sighed, and said, “Orvita, how do you keep getting yourself into these situations?” She was dabbing at her eyes as she said, “I guess I am a clutz. I feel so bad about this; do you understand why I didn’t tell you?” He sighed and said, “No, I don’t understand why you didn’t tell me up front, but you have now. I guess that is what counts. Let’s just try to forget about all this, and get ready for this evening. Oh, by the way, Boudreau said to tell you to wear those lovely earrings you purchased at Joseph’s this afternoon.”

Clem went into the bathroom to take a shower. Orvita was grinding her teeth now in anger. Boudreau was bound to get her in trouble with Clem. Orvita reached up and felt her neck. She was positive a noose was tightening. Her head was pounding, but she was determined to put on her best smile, and move forward through this. If Boudreau decided to tell Clem about the tripping incident, she was going to have the pleasure of watching his face as Clem would tell him he already knew. She snorted; and thought, “Boudreau, you’re going to have to get up a little earlier in the day to get ahead of me.”

To be continued...
