When I turned 16 5 months ago, my parents gave me a carton of cigarettes and a lighter as one of my birthday gifts. This was a total surprise to me as I did not smoke and wasn't even thinking about it. Their reasoning was that they both started smoking at 15-16 and had to put up with a lot of inconveniences and didn't smoke openly until college, and if I was going to smoke, they wanted me to do it openly. It took me about 3 weeks to decide to give it a try. I decided I would smoke a whole pack and then make the decision to continue or stop. I soon decided before the pack was gone that I wanted to continue. At this point my gf of 2.5 years intervened and begged me not to smoke using the familiar health reasons and the fact that she didn't like the odor/taste when we were kissing/making out. I decided that my gf was more important than smoking and stopped. Last weekend my gf ask me if I regretted quitting when she asked me to stop - I said no, that making her happy was more important, even though I did enjoy smoking. She then confessed that she had recently tried smoking and wanted to continue and wanted me to resume smoking with her. I agreed and we are now a happily smoking couple.
