Your cousin shouldn’t generalize things that way. If a girl who smokes already has a bad reputation smoking might be associated with her bad reputation, while if she has a good reputation, guys might think "look, that girl knows how to have fun and she even looks more mature": Smoking can be seen as an immature action (subordinating your body to a harmful action) but it can also be considered as an activity that makes you look older and therefore more mature. It really depends on who is judging and I don't think a person's reputation can be associated to the fact that he/she smokes. Everybody has a lot of personal qualities (good ones as well as bad ones) and it is them who should be taken into consideration when someone’s reputation is judged.
