Rana - I think your reply to the GM was actually excellent IMHO, it said everything that needed to be said given the situation.

I have been in similar situations (different of course, but still somewhat similar), and they are always gut wrenching!

But don't worry about making a concession with the new job. These things happen. When we feel somewhat desperate to secure a job, we're willing to concede.

Also, about your GM, it would not surprise me if he's been offered a bonus to keep as many employees on as possible because the Chinese company can't afford to lose too many in the beginning of the transfer.

This is common sense - they need you more than you need them. But as Michael pointed out, as soon as they get things figured out, then they hold the cards and might go looking for cheaper employees or simply change your contract.
