Interesting that it's Cornwall. You have to remember that there are more enlightened areas of the world than Cornwall. This is a tiny county right at the bottom of the UK and there are still plenty of people down here who have never even visited anywhere outside the county in their entire lives.

I have heard that we are the poorest area in the whole of the UK, and people earn on average £100 a week less than the rest of the country. It is a county that has very rich areas - all the beautiful coastal areas are inhabited by rich second home owners - but the rest of it is made up of run down or derelict industrial areas filled with poorly paid or unemployed people.

These are among the reasons why we do encounter homophobia and racism in this County. I think we are probably much less enlightened than places like London. Helston, where he was living, is a small town, and the school where he was bullied feeds in to the college where I teach. My colleagues and I have frequently noticed that our students leave something to be desired in their understanding of shall we say - cultural diversity. But we're working on it ;)

I don't think this lad's experience is necessarily representative of general attitudes in the UK.
