Yes, children see, hear and understand far more than we give them credit for. Lawrence's life would have made him even more aware of the unspoken cues and body language of people -- after all the ability to sense danger is probably the only reason he's still alive. I had no true idea who was watching Pamela, thought perhaps it was Robin. No clue at all about the mole. Casey can't stay away from the fight for Northern Irish freedom anymore than a moth can resist a flame. Pamela ran because her feelings were simply too strong and close to the surface, especially given that a whole pub full of people were watching. I saw Casey's proposal as a reaffirmation of their vows, a way of telling Pamela he'd marry her all over again despite their current troubles. Adversity shows you how strong you really are and relationships which are meant to last and where the feelings are deep and true can weather troubles, with the caveat that in the long run the good times must outweigh the bad. To me this was the start of the "settling" process, the acknowledgment that there's a problem, that something must be done about it and that they still love and need each other.
