Subject: I think David is playing a very dangerous game here. I think getting close to Pat was an assignment, but now the two have become friends, putting themselves at risk from all sides in this mess. Both would be regarded as traitors for some of the things they've done to help the other. I think being "undercover" in any type of job must be very lonely as you can never truly be yourself and become close to someone without putting them, yourself and the operation at risk. Nor would you be able to carry on a relationship with someone in the everyday world, as you'd have to go months -- or possibly years -- without contacting them in order to protect your cover. Very stressful work at the best of times, and these are so not the best of times. Also, being known to be gay in 1969 in the military would have ended David's career instantly and possibly ended up with him being court-martialed.
In reply to: Elaine 's message, "70.2) So now I can understand why David is 'allowed' to pursue a friendship with Patrick. It may be real friendship to David, but it has the look of espionage to his superiors. There simply must be more to be revealed about David, and I'm anxious to learn of it. I do find him attractive for his depth and honesty. But I think a man like David does get lonely. He's leading a solitary, clandestine kind of life. He takes huge risks when he does venture a friendship. I think his purposes with Patrick had political beginnings, but then he learned that Pat was very much like himself (aside from the physical attraction). It would be easy to want to develop a relationship with such a man, even if it would never be at the level David might wish for. As for strange bedfellows, this kind of war has so many splintered factions, it's hard to know who's angriest at whom sometimes." on 07:48:55 10/19/07 Fri
