Penelope Plummer won the 1968 Miss World contest, representing Australia. She became the first Aussie to win the title and a grandslam international pageant. Plummer's runners up were Kathleen Winstanleywas (United Kingdom), 1st runner-up; Miri Zamir (Israel), 2nd runner-up; Beatriz Sierra Gonzalez (Colombia), 3rd runner-up; and Arene Cecilia Amabuyok (Philippines), 4th runner-up. Miss World 1968, participated with 53 countries, was held in London, United Kingdom.

Four years later, another Aussie beauty captured another grandslam beauty title. Kerry Anne Wells was crowned Miss Universe 1972 beating 61 delegates from different countries around the globe. Delegates from Brazil, Venezuela, Israel, and England were Wells' runners-up in patricular order. Miss Universe 1972 was held in Long Beach, California, USA.

1972 turned out to be Australia's greatest year as Kerry Ann Well's victory was duplicated by her compatriot who won Miss World 1972. Belinda Roma Green bested 53 participants. Green is the second Australian to win Miss World. As a result, points gathered from Miss World and Miss Universe made Australia as Country Of The Year based on Global Beauties Grandslam Ranking.

After many years of waiting to have Australia's second Miss Universe, a former cheerleader for the Newcastle Knights rugby league team and the Hunter Pirates basketball team and a model, captured the Miss Universe crown in 2004 finally. Jennifer Hawkins bested more than 80 beautiful candidates. Earlier prior to the pageant's finals, Hawkins was never expected to make it to the final 5 by pageant fans, but she proved them wrong right during the final competition with her great performances in evening gown and swimsuit competitions as well as in the final interview. She accidentally stripped her skirt off in a fashion show during her reign.
