My kids & I watched all of President Bush's speeches. And we discussed them. I raised them to think for themselves. And one turned out liberal and one conservative.
The chanting you take offense to is no different than the chanting for Sarah Palin or any other politician for that matter. The "cult", in my opinion, is another scare tactic used to try to explain why so many are actually excited about politics for a change. He's popular with many people, that's all.
As far as the teacher who belittled a student, she should have been fired immediately with no pension. But the belittling goes both ways. Trust me on this...I live in a very conservative area and have suffered this myself.
As far as the "study guide" everyone is so worried about, the teachers have the option of using it or not, but having the President of the United States speak to millions of students and then using the opportunity to discuss government and civics just seems like a good thing to me.

I have never doubted that you are a reasonable person, Deb -- Jeannine, 11:32:00 09/04/09 Fri [1]
and I respect your opinions. You seem to be a very responsible parent who has raised good kids. But - that Pledge video is creepy. It is very different than any political rally I have been to. (I pledge to be a servant of BO???? really????)
As for the personality cult thing being a scare tactic - ok, call it that if you will. I think of it as being vigilant. History repeats itself. There are a lot of social issues (i.e. abortion - couched in the language "women's health issues") that are accepted by some that I strongly disagree with. I think that our arrogant President would love to turn the youth of America into little Obamabots. Sorry. I don't trust him.

Well, thanks for that vote of confidence! -- DizzyDeb, 12:03:28 09/04/09 Fri [1]
It has made for some very "interesting" discussions in our household. LOL
I think some people read too much into the "pledge commercial". It's simply some well-known people pledging to do more for the planet & their fellow man. Only one odd duck pledges directly to Obama, in those words. The others pledge to be a servant of the President of the United States and to all mankind. What a nice cult that would be. And the pledge to the President is a pledge made by every serviceman & woman when they are sworn in, as far as I know. Or am I wrong on that?

as I recall - Lord knows I said it five times and should remember, lol, the military swear to protect and defend the constitution of the US against all enemies, foreign and domestic, obey the orders of the POTUS and officers appointed over them.
Not quite the same thing, but I see your point.

Sorry. "obey the orders of the POTUS" just sounds funny.
I never claimed to be mature. ;)
