Subject: How many people have actually read the guides?
In reply to: Hogarth 's message, "I wonder how everyone feels about the Sept 8th "virtual visit" by Obama into your child's classroom." on 08:27:17 09/03/09 Thu

What baffles me, and always will - is how many people are up in arms about these study guides that they haven't even bothered to read. They're online at whitehouse.gov. A friend of mine was going on and on about them and refused to read them. Doesn't make for a very intelligent argument.

I really truly feel that you have to be digging for something to find controversy in those study guides. It's a bunch of open ended questions that no one is being forced into using anyway.

I can't believe the mess that is being made of this. Any time we elect a president info office and they want to address the country's students about the importance of education - it's fine by me. Democrat. Republican. Whatever. The video will be online for anyone to see. If parents are concerned - WATCH THE VIDEO. Discuss it with your kids. It's what I would do. But I'd be shocked if I felt the need to have a big sit-down talk with my kid regarding a speech about the importance of education. Give me a freaking break.

The school district for the city I live in has chosen to not show the speech. I find that downright appalling. I rarely get too into political discussions. I tend to avoid media coverage of stuff like this. But this has me throwing up my arms in disgust and very, very disappointed into the ugly bipartisanship that this country has latched onto.

You said exactly what I felt this morning when I read the paper. What is the fuss about? President Bush also spoke to students, but I don't recall anyone trying to suggest that he was trying to influence them to become Bushbots.

I don't think politics in this country will ever change and that makes me very sad. I would love to see some REAL reaching across the aisles and working together, instead of always trying to beat each other down.
