Subject: I wonder how everyone feels about the Sept 8th "virtual visit" by Obama into your child's classroom.
From what I'm reading parents have 3 options.
1. Will your child be watching it?
2. Will you write a letter to the school to opt out your child from watching it?
3. Will you keep your child home from school that day?

I think the uproar about this school thing is ridiculous -- Jenn, 14:24:35 09/03/09 Thu [1]
If it were my kid, they would be watching it. I'm not concerned that they are going to be brainwashed by a presidential speech. *eye roll*
There are far worse things going on in the education system than this. But holy moly, we can have a big ol' bipartisan poo party about this and let the media frenzy begin.

How ridiculous! -- DizzyDeb, 06:44:19 09/04/09 Fri [1]
The President is going to be making a speech to encourage students to do their best in school and achieve their goals. And this is grounds for protest, why?
I always encouraged my two sons to watch Presidential addresses, no matter who was in office. And then we had a discussion about how they viewed it. I think this is a great chance for students to hear directly from their President and then have a discussion on civics, government, and the importance of education.
I personally pity any parent who considers this some kind of mind-control attempt. They must truly keep their children in a bubble!

From what I'm reading..... -- Hogarth, 08:27:03 09/04/09 Fri [1]
it isn't speaking to the school kids and the speech so much that has folks so upset, it's the creepy study guide and distrust of what the teachers will make of it.
Have you seen the video of the black teacher who belittled a soldiers daughter for saying she'd vote for McCain? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecSIK16CgJg

I would watch the message myself first, then decide -- Jeannine, 09:57:31 09/04/09 Fri [1]
There are just too many of Obama's beliefs that I strongly oppose. Sorry. If the message is purely about the need for education and encouragement to apply themselves, fine. I do think it is very important that our children respect the President. And I do wonder what f it was Dubya addressing the kids... well, fill in the blank.
All this talk had me watching the Ashton Kutcher "Pledge" video again. Demi Moore: "I pledge to be of service to Barack Obama", and the fade out to his picture and robotic chants of "Yes We Can... yes we can... " and these people wonder what we object to?!
I heard Charles Krauthammer say recently that Obama is a combination of high intellect and huge arrogance. That is a good description imo. This whole creepy cult personality thing gives me the chills.

Yanno, Jeannine & Hogarth -- DizzyDeb, 10:12:02 09/04/09 Fri [1]
My kids & I watched all of President Bush's speeches. And we discussed them. I raised them to think for themselves. And one turned out liberal and one conservative.
The chanting you take offense to is no different than the chanting for Sarah Palin or any other politician for that matter. The "cult", in my opinion, is another scare tactic used to try to explain why so many are actually excited about politics for a change. He's popular with many people, that's all.
As far as the teacher who belittled a student, she should have been fired immediately with no pension. But the belittling goes both ways. Trust me on this...I live in a very conservative area and have suffered this myself.
As far as the "study guide" everyone is so worried about, the teachers have the option of using it or not, but having the President of the United States speak to millions of students and then using the opportunity to discuss government and civics just seems like a good thing to me.

I have never doubted that you are a reasonable person, Deb -- Jeannine, 11:32:00 09/04/09 Fri [1]
and I respect your opinions. You seem to be a very responsible parent who has raised good kids. But - that Pledge video is creepy. It is very different than any political rally I have been to. (I pledge to be a servant of BO???? really????)
As for the personality cult thing being a scare tactic - ok, call it that if you will. I think of it as being vigilant. History repeats itself. There are a lot of social issues (i.e. abortion - couched in the language "women's health issues") that are accepted by some that I strongly disagree with. I think that our arrogant President would love to turn the youth of America into little Obamabots. Sorry. I don't trust him.

Well, thanks for that vote of confidence! -- DizzyDeb, 12:03:28 09/04/09 Fri [1]
It has made for some very "interesting" discussions in our household. LOL
I think some people read too much into the "pledge commercial". It's simply some well-known people pledging to do more for the planet & their fellow man. Only one odd duck pledges directly to Obama, in those words. The others pledge to be a servant of the President of the United States and to all mankind. What a nice cult that would be. And the pledge to the President is a pledge made by every serviceman & woman when they are sworn in, as far as I know. Or am I wrong on that?

as I recall - Lord knows I said it five times and should remember, lol, the military swear to protect and defend the constitution of the US against all enemies, foreign and domestic, obey the orders of the POTUS and officers appointed over them.
Not quite the same thing, but I see your point.

In regards to the video.... -- Jenn, 13:34:56 09/08/09 Tue [1]
I actually liked the overall message. And I think it's a shame that you want to miss that entirely, and focus solely on the last 5 seconds. But that's where we seem to be today. Ignore the positive, dig around for something to be negative and run wildly with it.
Ya know what my bottom line is after watching that and hearing the surrounding protest, though?....
What the hell do I care what Ashton Kutcher says or does??
If Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore wanted to pledge to obey a shoelace, I couldn't care less.

Well I'm not a breeder myself, but I think my brother's kids -- LAwoman, 11:40:37 09/04/09 Fri [1]

Breeder? -- Susan, 09:22:18 09/09/09 Wed [1]
What an offensive, disrespectful term for all of the mothers in the world, including your own.

Why? -- niki, 10:29:13 09/14/09 Mon [1]
do you feel it is offensive and disrespectful? It could be used that way, but I didn't think of it as disrespectful at all. How do humans reproduce? By breeding. It may not be the word most people choose but that doesn't mean it was offensive.
breeder (noun): an animal, plant, or person that produces offspring or reproduces.

How many people have actually read the guides? -- Jenn, 11:58:23 09/04/09 Fri [1]
What baffles me, and always will - is how many people are up in arms about these study guides that they haven't even bothered to read. They're online at whitehouse.gov. A friend of mine was going on and on about them and refused to read them. Doesn't make for a very intelligent argument.
I really truly feel that you have to be digging for something to find controversy in those study guides. It's a bunch of open ended questions that no one is being forced into using anyway.
I can't believe the mess that is being made of this. Any time we elect a president info office and they want to address the country's students about the importance of education - it's fine by me. Democrat. Republican. Whatever. The video will be online for anyone to see. If parents are concerned - WATCH THE VIDEO. Discuss it with your kids. It's what I would do. But I'd be shocked if I felt the need to have a big sit-down talk with my kid regarding a speech about the importance of education. Give me a freaking break.
The school district for the city I live in has chosen to not show the speech. I find that downright appalling. I rarely get too into political discussions. I tend to avoid media coverage of stuff like this. But this has me throwing up my arms in disgust and very, very disappointed into the ugly bipartisanship that this country has latched onto.

Thank you, Jenn. -- DizzyDeb, 12:21:37 09/04/09 Fri [1]
You said exactly what I felt this morning when I read the paper. What is the fuss about? President Bush also spoke to students, but I don't recall anyone trying to suggest that he was trying to influence them to become Bushbots.
I don't think politics in this country will ever change and that makes me very sad. I would love to see some REAL reaching across the aisles and working together, instead of always trying to beat each other down.
