for what little it's worth, he then wrote this apology:

Clearly I have made a mistake and apologized for it and will pay for it. I received it as a text message from an acquaintance and immaturely put it up on facebook in the light of the election. Im not racist and apologize for offending you. I grew up on a ranch in a small town where that was a real thing and I need to grow up. I sincerely am sorry for being ignorant in thinking that it would be ok to write that publicly and apologize to you in particular. I have to be more mature than to put the reputation of my team at stake and to spread that kind of hate which I dont even believe in. Once again, I sincerely apologize.

Clearly what this Burnette posted was indefensible.

...Is being cut from the football team enough? Aren't there special laws for peeps who threaten the president? Shouldn't he be in JAIL?

That comment is unforgivable and unacceptable! But when are people going to learn NOT to post their stupidity on Facebook, My Space, etc.? Are they too stupid to realize it's gonna be there forever?

I really wish the Secret Service HAD come to visit him. That is one stupid Longhorn!

Secret Service, FBI or someone to scare the sh*t out of him. What a moron.

This guy doesn't deserve to be on any team. Shouldn't good character (and intelligence and common sense) matter as much as athletic ability? What a buzzkill!

[> I absolutely 100% agree that this guy is a moron and should be at least questioned, if not arrested. -- Jeannine, 11:44:55 11/07/08 Fri [1]

but ---- for the last eight years, it has been very common to read horrible things about the President on the internet. There have been books about his assassination. There was even a movie. He has been portrayed as a moron, idiot, criminal and evil incarnate. David Letterman has reinvented himself as a hate monger. Bill Maher, I won't even go there. Does anyone doubt that you could spend a little time on My Space or Facebook and find a page that recommends killing Bush?

My point is not to defend Bush in any way any more. I am done with that.

My point is that this kid, like so many others, has spent most of his life hearing this shit. Maybe he thinks it is the norm. He is wrong, of course, beyond wrong. The lack of civility and respect for the President AND EACH OTHER will come back to haunt us.

I intend to fully respect President Obama in every way. As he said, he is the President of all of us, whether we agree or disagree. If he begins to do things I disagree with, I am sure I will be vocal about it but I will do it the right way - within the system. And post about it here, of course!

let's not forget how President Clinton was treated. We all remember Clinton the rapist, Clinton the murderer, Clinton the drug dealer, Clinton the swindler, ad infinitum.

that George Bush is not the only president who has ever been criticized. And your use of the word slimeball is a good example.

Disrespect should not be met with disrespect. With disrespect, there is no "fair".

I will repeat my point from my post, Judy:

My point is that this kid, like so many others, has spent most of his life hearing this shit. Maybe he thinks it is the norm. He is wrong, of course, beyond wrong. The lack of civility and respect for the President AND EACH OTHER will come back to haunt us.

[> [> i cannot agree with you more. i was just about to post about the pressure our new pres. -- ozzie, 19:01:06 11/10/08 Mon [1]

obama must be facing, in all aspects. as much as i am proud that we finally elected (overdue, i might add) an african american to our judicial system, what pressures he must anticipate. this moron isn't helping. i think you worded it perfectly. it was the way he grew up. i am VERY moderate. i don't vote based on race. people teach hatred towards others. this kid was VERY wrong. that said, i told my kids tonight, for people like me, where do i go in the media to help me make the best unbiased choice on a national level??? fox is republican. nbc, cnn, abc are all very liberal or slanted that way. i want everyone to be heard. i had a hard time this past election on who to vote for. i REALLY tried hard to make the best choice that fit for ME, nobody else. i am by no means, saying what this kid said was justified. i just think you put it into better words than i ever could. i was brought up VERY die hard democrat. i fell in love with someone that was brought up with the same way but ended up being middle republican. you can't blame all our choices on how we were brought up but we do need to start making apologies and taking responsibility for our words/ actions.

I want this country to heal.

The media situation is dire, imo. No one knows where to go to find unbiased news, all of the news outlets have an agenda. Maybe time will help.
