Subject: Question

I am going to post a link to the LA Times below.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-palineffigy28-2008oct28,0,541630.story

I am sure you have seen the pic of the "effigy" of Sarah Palin hanging in LA.

My question is: if the effigy was of Barack Obama, would it be:

a. good clean Halloween fun
b. just bad taste.
c. The effigy would have already removed, the homeowners would be jailed for hate crimes and villified through media outlets as the face of GOP Racism.

followed by the story of an Obama effigy.

Both are hate, but unfortunately not crimes. Definitely both are hate speech that references violence, or perceived violence. However, in the one instance, the couple obviously doesn't agree with Palin's (or McCain's) politics and in the other instance one does not agree with a black man running a "white christian" nation.

Which is worse? It's subjective really. They're both horrible, along with countless others such as the baby bear w/obama stickers. Who *does* this type crap?

Whoever wins is in danger and I hope the secret service has their act together. I feel like sometimes this country hasn't progressed one iota....

are more like the young woman who falsely claimed she was attacked by a big black man who carved a B for Barack on her cheek. Or the two young men in Tennessee who wanted to shoot Obama in a drive-by shooting, kill 88 black people and behead 14 black children. I think those are hate crimes.

One is just as bad as the other, no matter what your political beliefs are! It turns my stomach that this country turns into such a nation of intolerance when there's an election in the offing. You couldn't pay me enough to run for any office with the abuse that candidates now take as the norm.

The Toronto Star, that one man was sentenced to 45 days for hanging black sceleton with a confederate flag above it. He was sentenced under hate crime legislation. He was claiming that it was a Hallowee'n joke. So there...

Anyway, both effigies, not matter how explained, are in very poor taste.

is more stringent about hate laws. I noted they asked him to take it down and gave him a chance and he refused so was arrested under Canada's laws.

Both of the vile effigys that happened in the US in the recent press are considered free speech and were treated as such. Both were 'asked' to take them down and both have.
