I don't subscribe to RS anymore, so I have not seen or heard of that second 'cartoon'. It definitely deserves as much outrage as the first one did, but a different kind. It's just out and out barbaric - to exploit what was probably the most horrific time in McCain's life is cruel. There's nothing funny about that.

On the other hand, I find nothing funny about the NYer cover (the fact that it's the cover adds to my outrage) and find that it feeds into the basest, most ignorant "fears" of what I see from the minds of many vitriolic republicans. Many people out there still believe that Obama IS a Muslim (despite his very public proof of long-time attendance at a CHRISTIAN church), and wrongly tie that into the feeling of paranoia of anything Islamic just as this administration wants them to.

I believe 110% in the freedom of speech and the press, but neither of these cartoons should have ever seen the light of day.

Thank God ya'll feel that way. For the record, it was in last month's Rolling Stone - at least online, I don't subscribe, but here is a link to the article - Full Metal McCain, from June.

The McCain cartoon also manages to work in racial stereotypes, what with the slanted eyes. It is disgusting. Say what you will about McCain, but ridiculing the years he spent as a POW is beneath contempt.

I think it is absolutely horrible what people will do - all in the name of getting their candidate elected. Politics sucks, and the media sucks. Just give me the FACTS and let me make up my own mind.
