I think it helps you, but not him. -- HF, 11:06:17 08/29/08 Fri [1]
I applaud McCain's pick insomuch as she's right in line with traditional, conservative Republican values. (I hate pandering; see my post below on last night's speech.) I think she'll have great appeal in particular to Republican women -- she's a strongly anti-abortion female candidate who has an infant with Down's Syndrome.
The problem with this nomination that I see (other than my personal political views, which are pretty far from those of Ms. Palin) is that I don't understand how it will help McCain attract additional support. Hillary supporters are not going to vote for someone as ardently anti-abortion as Palin. People who are worried about Obama's "inexperience" are not gaining anything with Palin. Finally, Alaska? It's already a Republican state and it's hardly what I would call influential in the political scene.

I agree it's a good pick for him. -- SB, 17:27:17 08/29/08 Fri [1]
I find it incredibly odd that suddenly experience is not a big deal to the GOP - LOL! At least that issue will be off the table except for each sides back and forth rhedoric....Well SHE's only been a governor....Well HE's only been a senator....Well SHE has executive experience....blah blah blah blah.....I'm sick to death of the hypocrisy of American politics.
I have to admit I watched Obama's speech (I have not watched much politics at all but I do read a lot) and I did like it...a LOT. It made me feel a little hopeful for a better America and hope is a good thing. Sure it's just words, but some great things have started with only words.
I will also watch McCain/Palin speech. From what I've read and seen today she seems like a tough cookie, but who socially is on a different atmosphere than me. Will Hillary voters really flock to vote for her just because they both have XX chromosomes? It seems they couldn't be more opposite in viewpoints - why in the world would smart women vote opposite of their viewpoints just to get a woman elected....tell me women aren't this stupid? Lastly, I wonder how she leaves a 3 month old son in his first and most important year to campaign for VP and gets by fairly unscathed by the 'family values' party? Boy, if the Dem's would've pulled that how she would be called such a horrible mother.......again the hypocrisy of politics.
In any event, the debates will certainly be interesting and more entertaining than I would've imagined. This woman will spice things up no doubt!

LOL on the political back and forth -- Jeannine, 08:00:04 08/30/08 Sat [1]
and ICAM on Obama's speech. When the tears of joy dry and the tingles going up Chris Matthews legs subside, however, you gotta wonder where all the $$$ are gonna come from to cure all the ills of the world. It did indeed make you feel hopeful tho. That is what great orators do and he is right up there. During the upcoming debates? We will see and I cannot wait!
As far as playing the Mom neglecting her baby card -- that is way too much of a hot potato for either side. Crys of sexism would resound. The experience card won't work either - Barry's resume isn't exactly fat and he is at the TOP of the ticket.
Anyway, I am happy with the pick as are many many other Americans. It is exciting and I am so looking forward to the McCain/Palin sign going up in my yard!

My hubby called it to be her on Aug. 10 ... -- muppetmel, 13:34:24 08/29/08 Fri [1]
... I have it in writing. I don't know much about her but he's over the moon and says she's a great choice. And that should answer some of the concerns that people had claiming sexism against Hillary Clinton.

She certainly has gall to ask for votes from women who.... -- JennyJenkins, 16:52:08 08/29/08 Fri [1]
... who would have voted for Mrs Clinton. How could a Democrat vote for a Republican (a Conservative Republican yet) just because she's a woman? Does she think that Democrat American women are that gullible?

Let get's this right... -- scooter, 07:19:33 08/30/08 Sat [1]
John McCain, 72 year old cancer survivor, picks a woman who he has met ONCE to be his vice president. This is putting "country first?" This is good judgment?

Well, buddy.... -- scooter, 09:43:24 08/30/08 Sat [1]
this may surprise you, but I like and respect John McCain. I just don't understand how he could make such an important decision based on one meeting.

Well, Jenny - and a note to my buddy Scooter -- Jeannine, 08:09:38 08/30/08 Sat [1]
Hillary asked for votes from women just because she is a woman and no one questioned that. I doubt that Mrs Palin is expecting the hard core feminist vote, no worries.
Scooter - McCain picking her makes you question his judgement and patriotism because he only met her ONCE? ... hmmmmm. Is that "Change we can believe in"???? I am so tempted to go into one of my famous lectures about political hate speech, but you did ask me to spare you those.

I don't remember that particular speech, Jeannine. When did HC ask for votes JUST bcs she's a woman? -- JennyJenkins, 19:09:00 08/30/08 Sat [1]
That's what Sarah did yesterday. She appealed to Democrat women who would have supported Hillary to vote for her and McCain just because... That's rather presumtuous considering that there is a sea of difference between republican policies and democratic ones. Do they think that people don't have any convictions or principles?

no they don't Jenny -- jayjay, 01:23:24 08/31/08 Sun [1]
they think that any woman in this hormonal sea of humanity, will vote for any other candidate with a vagina.
i guess. i can't figure it out.

Well, I didn't find Sarah saying that when I read the transcript either - and no matter anyway -- Jeannine, 09:07:49 08/31/08 Sun [1]
No women in my acquaintance vote based on genitalia.
If McCain had picked Romney/Pawlenty/etc etc the meme would have been the "forward thinking Dems against old white men" so what are you gonna do?
If nothing else, this choice has been a huge boost to the enthusiam of the conservative minded voter. It also stole quite a bit of thunder from Barry's coronation coverage!
