Subject: genre as a communicative event

On page 6 of this text, Introduction to Discourse Analyses, the authors mention Swales, who said that a genre is a recognizable communicative event, enphasising that the communicative purpose of the text is the most important feature related to genre. As I had never thought about genre in this way I'd like to hear some more comments about it, as well as the relation it has with communication.
