The term "genre" was first used to talk about different types of literary texts. Now it is used to refer to any type of text, written or oral, which is recognizable by its users (writers/speakers and readers/listeners). Examples of written genres are business letters, medicine prescriptions, class notes, receipts, newspaper headlines or research projects. Oral genres can be exemplified by a sermon, a joke, a prayer or a chat. We can also talk about hybrid genres, those who have characteristics of both oral and written genres – as e-mails, blogs and forum messages! We say they are hybrid because, although they are written, they share cahracteristics with oral genres - they do not involve much planning and can be exchanged in real time. Now language teachers have started to use the concept of genre to help their students to interpret and produce text. You’ll see that issues concerning genre will become a lot clearer when we start the fourth module of our course.
