Posting #2
I found the section on Brain Injury and Recovery very interesting and most relevant to me. Quite recently I worked at Youth Villages which was a treatment facility for troubled children/teens. In particular I worked with 13-18year old aggressive males who had been diagnosed as Mentally Retarded. One client I had was a young man (16years of age) who unfortunately had a traumatic brain injury due to two car accidents that occurred within weeks of each other (both occurring when he was 13). At some points throughout his treatment, my supervisor asked me to help him with his reading, writing, and language skills (which were very poor and extremely below grade level). My first reaction was confusion, being that I thought that his brain injury would limit his ability to improve greatly on his skills/ learn new material. However after working with this young man, I learned, contrary to what the book says, he definitely was able to improve his reading, writing skills, and language skills greatly. My thought behind this is that although all odds may be against someone with intensive, one on one tutoring, care, and patience almost anyone can be helped!!!!
