I too have enjoyed the discussions in class and have learned a lot from them. I would not have used the "n-word" either. I am sure the way I was brought up has some to do with my feelings about the word. I remember an instance when I was young and we were at my families for Thanksgiving. One of my distant relatives used the word in what he surely thought was innocent but was nevertheless very offensive. To this day I can still remember my mother's reaction. We were on our way out the door before my Grandfather convinced the man to appologize for the remark and eventually my mom cooled down and we stayed. But her reaction nevertheless stayed with me and probably has a lot to do with my intollerance of the word. That being said my reasoning for not using the word goes beyong my mom's distaste for it. The reason I do not use the word is simply because I understand and respect the history behind it. It is just a word, but words can be very destructive and that word particularly has hundreds of years of hurt and emotion behind it. I have many black friends, some of them although they know me well would absolutley be offended to hear me say it. Others wouldn't think anything of it, but you will still never hear me say it simply because I don't think I would like the way it sounded coming from my mouth.
