Subject: Something woke her with a start,

...plunging her back into her own harsh reality.

"I'm sorry, Josie," the nurse apologized. "I was trying not to wake you." She had come to change Tommy's IV and noticed his sister curled up in the same chair where she had spent many nights over the past year. She really did try to be as quiet as she could. She knew this girl would need all her strength in the days, or hours, to come. Tommy's condition was not improving and the outcome was almost inevitable. This was not the first bout of pneumonia that he had suffered, and with each incident, it had become harder and harder for the weakened boy to stave off the infection that ravaged his small body.

"That's okay, I wasn't asleep," Josie answered sleepily. She knew she had fallen asleep in spite of herself. She just hadn't wanted to admit it to this nurse. She wished the nurse would just leave Tommy alone, leave her alone. Stiff from the unnatural position in which she slept, Josie stood and stretched her back. "How is he?" Josie inquired, already guessing the answer.

"The doctor will have to talk to you about his condition," the nurse informed her.

Josie looked disgusted and the nurse couldn't blame her. This was the standard answer when a patient's condition was worsening, and they both knew it by now.

"Fine!" Josie spat out. She was stiff, and tired…so tired. Tired of coming to this hospital. Tired of being in this room. Tired of not being able to do anything to hurry along whatever process it took to release her brother from his fragile, misguided hold on life.

She watched as the nurse finished her duties and waited for her to leave, then she approached the small sick boy and whispered into unhearing ears.

"I'll be back, baby. I have something I need to check on." She kissed his forehead and headed out the door.
