Yes they beat a Post Falls team that is rebuilding. They lost to a Cheney team by one which was a very good team. Some advanced scouting may have made the difference. The Boys have no information other that the two brothers were good. Don't get me wrong. Coach Hannen is doing a good job, It's just the little things like watching film of the other teams that they are not getting to be prepared that they got from Thacker. And yes the yelling and screaming has stopped and that is a good thing esspecially if your a ref!

How do you know he isnt watching film? He doesnt have to watch it with the kids to get them prepared. If Hannan wasnt there they probably would have lost by 10 or at least 5 meaning a bench technical, 2 FTs and a score on possession. Refs? No. Players.

OK, OK. My son is on the team. They knew nothing about Cheney. They did not practice any defense for a known offense that was coming at them. And yes I'm a Thacker supporter. Mike is a single man and spent all of his off time devoted the advanced scouting of teams, had the boys watching film so they could see and then practice for the opponent. Maybe all of that information worked for past teams. They were used to the Thacker way and are learning a new one. But I'm glad that Greg is the coach. He has motivated the boys in the difficult position this has put him in. He is still learning the right mix for this team. They will get better. It's too bad he has to coach knowing that he is the interm coach. He was the obvious choice to replace Mike. I do support Greg and the way he has started the season. It will be a good year.

I am a parent of a former player and have seen how things are going and have heard the comments about Hannan and how he needs to be more like Thacker. I think he is enough like thacker in waht he runs. People need to appreciate the fact that he stepped up to help these boys. They could have had some new coach from out of this area that knew nothing of Thacker. WOuld people be on his back about who plays and what they run? I doubt it. So far there is really no reason to have thacker back. Greg is doing fine. If they bring thacker back it is just as bad as when they let him go.

Yes, there is a reason to have Thacker back, it is just that you have no idea what it takes to run a successful basketball program. That is really evident by your comments so far. It is amazing that people you poke your nose into things you know nothing about. If you have been a head basketball coach for twelve years, then there would be merit in your concerns and comments.
As far as the yelling is concerned, I would like to see all parents who just parent and do not yell at their kids. Can you honestly say that you have never yelled at your kids, NEA Dad? Not many can do that. I think all of us have been yelled at sometime in our life. A part of yelling is letting people know what "they ought to hear and not what they want to hear". No one likes that but it is necessary.
I find it offensive that you think your way of parenting/coaching should be that of everyone. That is arrogant and ignorant. I don't think anyone can sermonize on how coaches should coach and how parents should parent. Your style of parenting probably works best for you and your family. That is great but it may not be the best for someone else. So what gives you the insight on how Mike Thacker should coach and direct his players? If you and your kid does not like that style then you are free to go elsewhere. That is not too difficult to understand or do.

It is not difficult to understand that someone else is being successful and not acting foolish on teh sidelines in the meantime. Freeman basketball is about the boys not the attention a coach can bring to himself. I understand the yelling but about every little thing? You dont think that is a bit obsessive? Officiating, Shooting, Traveling, Defense, passing. HIgh school kids dont make mistakes? ...of course they do. I make mistakes in my job but nobody comes in and starts yelling at me for them.

Ok, i've been trying to hold back, but i can't any longer. We just lost to Colville, a team that we would have easily beaten by 10-15 if Mike Thacker was our head coach. Yeah, that may seem like a biased statement, and who knows, maybe it is. But after being in the Freeman basketball program since 3rd grade and playing for Thack for 4 years, I know Mike Thacker's coaching abilities. Is he the best coach in the state? No. But he makes athletes into basketball players, mediocre players good, and good players great. He knows how the get the most out of his players from the second the ball goes up until the final buzzer sounds. And yes, he yells, big freakin deal. He turns boys into men. And one great thing I've had the chance to witness throughout the past five years or so is how much he's changed as a person. In five years i never saw him get it anyones face or yell at anyone individually. All yelling was done to the group to describe a group effort. I know this may be hard to believe to people (and it seems like theres a lot) who want to make him out to be a villain, or some abusive, win-at-all-costs cut-throat type of person. As a player who's witnessed everything first hand, i'd like to take this time to say nothing is further from the truth. What people see at the games is the worst, end of story.
We all love coach Thacker. Even when he's at his worst, acting like a crazy person, every player will tell you we'd rather be coached by him than some lifeless coach who doesn't care about anything and is only there to "help us out." Coach Hannan is a great guy, but Mike Thacker he is not. At this point both of our losses can be attributed to him, and I'm seriously doubting whether or not he can coach himself out of a paper sack. The fact of the matter is, we chose him because he's an awesome guy who's been in the program and knows what we're all about. We're really glad to have him, and I'm sure he'll get better as the season progressives. But right now, as i sit in my room, still frustrated from tonight's pathetic loss, I'm feeling pretty low.
People don't realize the position the school board put us in, they had all summer to try and fire him, but instead wait until the night before the first day of school. Real classy. (What goes around comes around!) I'm so proud to have grown up in Freeman and gone to school here, but the ugly side of my community has become self-evident. And the Dresbacks and Carrells claim they did what they did in the name of GOD, can you believe that? As a devout Christian that offends me that they would condone lying and trickery all in the name of my lord and savior. Talk about a God complex. Talk about a holier-than-thou attitude. I went to the school board meeting, I was the first one to speak, actually. Over 80 people came and talked in favor of Thack, including about 20 former players. And who spoke against him? Two Carrells, two Dresbacks, and some psycho lady who i'd never seen before. Not one former player had enough guts to come up and speak against him. Jon Dresback wrote a letter and had his daddy read it for him because he didn't want to come. He works at Starbucks on the south hill, i don't think he's that busy.
But at the end of the day, the Freeman boys will be ok. We're soldiers, and we've got some real talent. Look out Colfax and Lakeside, we're coming. So i may be sitting here, still frustrated from tonight's loss, but i know there's better days coming soon. Sean, keep up the good work, you're the man.

Well I've had some time to think and cool off and i'd like to say that Coach Hannan can coach his way out of a paper sack. That was stupid of me to say. It's just that i hate losing more than anything and he's the easy person to blame. We've got a long way to go, but the season's just begun.

Where to begin...first, you ain't winning anything by posting your frustrations on a public bulletin board. Second, start leading and stop blaming. I'm a Thackerbacker but the loss had little to do with coaching and a lot to do with getting outrebounded and displaying the most pitiful performance at the free throw line seen in a long, long time. To hang that loss on any coach is nonsense, especially coming from a player and supposed leader. It's time for someone to be a leader and if it's a sophomore or junior, then so be it. Lead, follow or get out of the way.

>> It is great to see passion in all the players and parents in the boys program. I like the want to win attitude. I am also glad that the girls program is running well and staying out of the politics. Aren't the girls fun to watch? I have stayed to watch the boys play in the wins and losses. I hope that people can look at the game and how it was played. Instead of looking through the mommy, daddy, and Thacker goggles, start keeping your own stats. How many times were the boys out hussled, rebounded, and please don't look at the freethrow percentage. If the boys and parents don't start realizing who the coach is this year, it will be a long season. These athletes listen to us (parents) more than we think at times. Coach Thacker is a great person, but not the coach this year. I have not even seen him at a game watching all the kids that he mentored. I know it is hard for him to be in the situation, but maybe a kind word from him to the boys about playing hard for whoever is coaching can be helpful. Please come and support the Freeman Girls and our great coaching staff (Matt Gregg, Ashlee Taylor, Kaila Floyd, and Brian Prior).

I wonder what Coach Hannan thinks about this. Is I was your coach you would no longer be on the team. You are selfish and care only about yourself. This will be the last time on post on this site. I cant believe the selfishness on this team especially by the so called captains. Grow up, move on, and do what your asked. You never know things might work out for you. Good Luck with these kids coach hannan, you dont deserve this at all.

SEAN: What about running this website gives you the right to ridicule anyone that doesn't share the same opinion as you? I used to respect you for being so loyal but now you just seem like you're waiting to pounce on anyone that disagrees with you, or anyone of the same mindset. It's nice you provide a place for people to vent, and there are obviously two very bitter sides here. Why are YOU poking your head in? This situation will work itself out, with no help from you.
