~ While the 'shit' of life causes one to take a deep breath in, and hold, just to survive it

ya just gotta love that slow beautiful exhale of release!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

putting the 'shit' behind me, I'd like to share a high point from the week just gone

Jesse had his final farewell at Westbridge, last Friday, but it's not that, so much, that I will share with you...it was a single moment that I will remember for a long time to come!

just before the final assembly, all the students stood up to give Jesse a farewell Haka.

"The haka is a composition played by many instruments. Hands, feet, legs, body, voice, tongue, and eyes...they all play their part in blending together to convey in their fullness the challenge, welcome, exultation, defiance or contempt of the words."

now, the teacher who trained the kids in the Haka, was ill in hospital, but he had trained 2 boys to lead the rest of the kids into, and through it....but when they all stood up, the 2 boys backed out (nerves overcame them)...and as the other kids were all standing there wondering what would happen next, one boy spoke up, from the back....it was Jesse's best friend at Westbridge, Julian...

When this boy/young man started to lead the rest of the kids into the Haka, his voice filled the room, he stood taller, and gave it everything he had...I was spellbound by his presence, and proud of him for stepping up...

a little way into the Haka and there was a part that the other kids had to say, but they didn't...so Julian did (to keep it flowing), and a group of kids started laughing...

he felt humiliated, and the haka stopped, and he cried...and I cried for him...but I was proud because he didn't react with violence. Jesse raced to his side, and when the others crowded around Julian, Jesse pushed him away, and took his friend to another room, where they sat and talked together for ages. These boys have a history of violent behaviour (as did my boy), so this was a huge moment....bigger than the performance itself.

I realize at this point that very few of you (if any) will know or understand exactly what a Haka is, but it's regularly performed by the All Blacks (New Zealand's Representative Rugby team), before each game. Below is a clip that will show you the power and intensity of an All Blacks Haka (they're called that because of their uniform colours)...and I saw that same power and intensity in a 12 year old boy, on Friday, and it was incredible...

enjoy.....

*love 'n' hugs to you all*

Sasha Sasha Sasha

Let me count the reasons why I so love you

No let me say to add one more
and never count what can't be counted!

You just filled my heart with joy
and then took me into a world I know little
about and brought to my cave the power of
a Haka

Your rock and Jesse well you tell him for me

that Andy Say's he is well on his way
to being a man and that smiles my day.

Love you both!

and thanks for this!

____________________________________________________________

I meant to say that Jesse pushed *them* away, as there was a group of them
and they all backed off when Jesse came to Julian's side and pushed them away
it could've gone a whole different way, but it was just such a cool moment on so many
different levels and I don't think I could ever do it justice by trying to explain...

Andz, with you understanding Jesse the way you do, maybe you know what I'm talking about

and another cool trickle down effect (Gotta love the trickle down), was that the Westbridge Staff,
and the policeman that was there teaching the kids about drugs awareness, were all so impressed by him that day

Westbridge children get an allotted time in that school before being transitioned
into mainstream, but Jess had a significantly shorter time period with them
and although Jess had worked well and made wonderful progress they were concerned
that it just might not have been enough time......until that day!

I'm so glad that you enjoyed the Haka :)

I've been playing that thing all afternoon..

mmmmmmm all those lovely thighs..lol

but seriously...thank you for reading this blog, and for watching the film clip

No, thank you Sasha, for posting it.

...and yes, I totally understand Jesse
and I know that he will be just fine even
if he has a setback or two because he has
great heart and compassion and a Mother
that has an endearing and eternal love
for her son.

I walk a similar path with similar issues
and it enables me to feel the connection
and be certain he will not only be fine
but, bring to the world great things.

...and now I need the Haka to wake me up
and get my energy flowing!

Bang a freakin' Gong!

Oh what an exhale that was Sasha!!!

Ya know, as a mom, and I can relate well to the endurance one has to have to keep up to a child that has challenges. It's never and easy feat, but it's well worth it in the end. This is ONE of the moments, that you wear proudly, and rightly so.

I for one, have never heard of a Haka, and that in itself has blessed me, in watching the video to get a bigger impact of what you witnessed that day for Julian, for Jesse and for all the mom's that love unconditonally and eternally. Kudos to you!

I often wished there was a "transition" school for kids here like that, and in a way, I suppose there is, but it would be called a Detention hall, or similar. Yet, the focus is to mainstream the kids there, and here the focus is well, we've got to radically change you kid attitude.

Striking similarities in children, and vast difference in methods of embracing, accepting and helping children from here to there. I can't tell you how this has touched me. My own son having had troubles, with aggression, anger and the likes, yet never has he been diagnosed with anything, other than blame! Which I find to be the true shame in all of this.

My son, whom I've watched from a young tender age struggle with concetration, focus ability, and reading. Low self-esteem when no one listened to him, or me. I always told them he was a visual learner, and couldn't do much auditively. Yet, they ignored that fact and in grade 4, he came home totally devastated, and feeling about as worthless as a slug when he failed to be able to handle 20 words a week for spelling tests.

So, to prove them wrong, I took the time each week and made flash cards. Nice contrasting flash cards, using colored construction paper, and two different colored markers. Wrote his words out, and had him stare at it for 30 seconds. Then I told him to close his eyes, and try and see the imprint behind his closed eyelids. Asked him to spell it out loud what he saw. Each time he succeeded. But to further help his confidence, as he felt this wasn't enough, we also used American Sign Language techniques, by finger spelling the words. This way if he couldn't retrieve it mentally, he could use his hands under his desk to form the letter sequences of each word. Ya know what??? He came home with a perfect spelling test each week! And they say mom's don't know anything about their child.

I say, just because someone has a Ph.D. or a Bachelor's or Master's degree in anything, does not make them the wiser one. Mom's know their children...as you do yours. THAT is the deciding factor on how far a child can go, when he has the love and support of a wonderful MOM. LIKE JESSE AND YOU!

KUDOS TO YOU BOTH!

I love stories like this, sorry to ramble on, but I had to share..it was bubbling out of me here. I am so happy for him, for you and for the accomplishment.

Love to you both!

~ that is so wonderful, Tamz....I'm so thrilled that you shared your story with me/us

I love it when parents never give up, no matter how rough it gets because at the end of the day our children are WORTH all the late nights, all the warn out days, all the physical and mental exhaustion, we may experience...they enrich our lives so deeply I simply can't describe in words...

I loved reading this, this morning...thanks so much for sharing

I so agree with the sense of compassion you feel for the Haka. I get the same kind of Shrivers (hahahaha) when I hear Elgars Pomp and circumstance March, 'Land of hope and glory'. Proud to be British, sad at the way life is taking my country into the shit. I listen to that tune and tremble with pride.

You my sweet friend are quite right to be filled with pride.May your dreams remain bright and hopeful. As for jesse, well he is gonna do just fine.

Peace and hugs,

Paul.

Sash,

I have to say that I have seen the Haka performed last year by a group of young men at a pagan gathering. Wow!

I have to say that even I am very proud of Jesse for the reaction and compassion in his actions to his friend Julian, even in the face of peer pressure. Yahoo! *grins* Talk about an exhale!!!

I'm so happy for you, Sash! And happy for Jesse!!

~Hugs to you both~
