There’s an all new McCrearyFest on the horizon. Miss McCrearyFest, that is. With the same traditional values that have served the festival for nearly three decades, Miss McCrearyFest 2008 is getting a makeover. Well, a re-makeover anyway. She’s inviting in the 21st Century, though all the while returning to her bonafide pageant roots.
With McCrearyFest president, Shane Gilreath, at the helm, with a 4 year agreement to remain as executive-director, and the help of, among others, Miss McCrearyFest 1986, Dana Rector-West, the McCrearyFest Board of Directors has set out to re-establish the identity of the young woman bearing the McCrearyFest title as a pertinent and valuable part of our local community.
With a much anticipated return to the stage of McCreary Central, the 2008 installment will see Miss contestants (16 and up) compete in elements that haven’t been seen on the McCrearyFest stage in years. Swimsuit and interview are making a welcomed return, coupled with competitions in evening gown and the all-important on-stage question. Added to the Teen pageant (13-15 years) will be a competition in sportswear.
“We’ve welcomed new pageant sponsors this year,” Gilreath said. “This year’s prize package is expected to be the largest in pageant history, which is something we’re really excited about.”
Part of that winning prize package for Miss McCrearyFest 2008 will also be a trip to Miss Kentucky United States this April in Covington, with a chance to compete in Las Vegas for the Miss United States title. Initial deadlines have been extended, and applications, available throughout the community and on the official McCrearyFest website (www.mccrearyfest.com), are currently being accepted for all divisions of the 2008 Miss McCrearyFest pageant. “We’ve returned the pageant to its original format with Miss McCrearyFest getting her own night,” Gilreath added. “I think we’re really going to amp-up the prestige of this pageant. Make it as close to the big time as anything in our county.”
Part of the amping up of the pageant is expected to be the presence of David Darring, a Kentucky filmmaker whose works have taken him to Hollywood and back. Darring plans to produce a documentary of the 2008 pageant.
The winner of this year’s pageant is expected to receive an as-of-yet unannounced scholarship award, with all participants of Miss McCrearyFest receiving gifts from sponsors from as far away as Colorado.
With three nights of pageants slated on the McCrearyFest agenda, Miss McCrearyFest 2008 will be crowned on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at McCreary Central High School. Entry Fees for Miss McCrearyFest and Miss Teen McCrearyFest are set at $65. All other divisions, with the exception of the newly-added Mrs. McCrearyFest ($40) are $50 per entrant.
“Unless participation is low this year, the pageant will be open only to McCreary County residents,” Gilreath said, of yet another change taking place for the 2008 pageant season. “We really hope that the moms and dads and boys and girls who have supported the McCrearyFest pageants over the years, are as excited as we are, and we hope for their continued support.”
