Ancient Britons were overtaken by the Romans, who made straight roads, efficient agriculture, international trade etc.

Then the Roman Empire collapsed? Did the Anglo-Saxons build on this great foundation? No, they relapsed into mud huts during the Dark Ages. They had no culture to handle these sophisticated concepts at the time.

Fast-forward to 20th century Africa. With regard to colony handover; what makes people think you can take an African leader from a completely different background to the westernised democracy model, put him in a smart suit, call him President and get success?

Ian Smith recognised this. He saw what was happening further north in Africa, and instinctively knew what would happen in Rhodesia. He was right then, and right now. Maybe a 50 year training period to create a new culture throughout the African civil service and society, then a graduated handover would have worked.

As a Brit, I only had the privilage of visiting soon after 1980. Nevertheless, I could still feel the strong national pride in a self supporting, industrious people. Great people in a great country. The place had something that I have never seen anywhere else.

My condolences to the Smith family and all Rhodesians worldwide. I am currently flying the Rhodesian flag at half-mast in respect.

History is tragically proving Ian Smith all too far sighted.
