- Time To Move On -- TTaylor, 15:47:11 07/25/08 Fri [1]
After watching a recent documentary on Zimbabwe done by PBS and Frontline, I have come to the conclusion that Zimbabwe nee Rhodesia isn't worth it. The country is in complete shambles, and it would billions to get the place even at a semi-functioning country. I do believe it's time to move on and remember the past. It was once a beautiful place to be, it isn't anymore.

Where Rhodesians soooooo Evil?
People are always saying get a life, why do you morn something that was never yours.
Why do we morn? do we morn the Life style? or do we morn the land? what is it that was so magical about the place?
is it the people? black and white? the Climate?
Did we as Rhodesians do worse than the current Zimbabwe government? Did the Rhodesian forces really commit the attrocities that the Liberation people say we did?
I mentioned the Chinese thing and asked if they would be proud or insulted simply because they would apprear to me to be a very proud race why would they want to be labeled Black, white or anything other than Chinese?
To the guy who lost his dad we all lost someone in a stupid war. a worthless war, idiotic waste of time !!!!! liberation war ......... like hell who is liberated ...... Mugabe alone? one man one Vote..... and if you vote wrong you are Re Educated in a Zanu camp!!!!
It would seem that that Africa ... um sorry... correction the world fears Mugabe.
we fear it because of the colonial White black Race past thing ....? and all this time I thought we lived in the modern world where all was equal (stupid me)!

It seems that Mugabe is now telling anybody who will listen that the opposition will never run Zimbabwe. He is even talking about going to war over the matter ..... I can't help feeling that dementia is setting in.

If Mugabe is removed .... and that is a distinct possibility now, he will scuttle off to South Africa to see out his remaining years. There will be no chance of him being prosecuted in any international courts.
Once he has gone there will come the reckoning. Zimbabwe is now in hock to China, they practically own the country. The West will of course be expected to pick up the tab for another African despot, who has raped his own country and abused its citizens.
In all truth and honesty, I cannot see Zimbabwean agriculture ever recovering to what it once was, not unless the commercial farmers return. And of course, what about all the confiscated farms, what will the MDC do about that? Not a lot probably.

- International Law? -- Mark, 02:11:27 04/29/08 Tue [1]
I have to ask this it is really bugging me. Surely with all the evidence of beatings and various other atrocities there is some law that Mugabe himself has to answer to being a head of state? With all this can he not be prosecuted ETC? Or is he as head of state above any law? Could someone please explain this to me.
Lets be frank during the Liberation war the Rhodesian Forces where blamed for atrocities similar to what we are seeing coming out of Zimbabwe now does this not prove that he was responsible? I it was my understanding that after Hitler they brought about changes to the international laws in order to prosecute heads of state who do this kind of thing?
Or is this purely about race? He being a powerful black leader is untouchable and above any international Laws?

- Ian Smith -- Thomas Orecchia, 16:27:22 02/28/08 Thu [1]
It is with the greatest sadness that I express my deep sympathy and condolences to the Rhodesian expatriate community on the passing of Ian Smith. Please accept these few words as my own personal memorial to him.
It was my interest in the terrible state of immigration affairs within my own county that led me to find and read a series of books which focused on historical accounts of racial strife and national decay. Needless to say one of them was Smith’s The Great Betrayal. I read the book in the fall of 2003. I had known little of Rhodesia or her history before reading it. But after finishing the book I was left with a profound respect for Smith, as a man of courage and supreme principle; a longing for the well ordered Rhodesia which he described and that I had never had opportunity to experience, and; utter distain and contempt for the people and policies who led to its end.
Since then I have periodically searched the web to see what the latest news was with Ian Smith, and it only today (February 28, 2008) that I have learned of his passing. In this country those who lived and fought in the Second World War are stylized in popular media as “The Greatest Generation”. The term I think is just as (if not more) fitting to those, like Smith, who not only fought the oppressive tyranny of WWII, but then devoted the remainder of their lives to the preservation of Western Culture and its people in the face of insurmountable odds. I pray that we continue the fight with the same conviction, courage and tenacity.
May God bless Ian Smith and may his memory live forever within the harts of his people.

- Rhodesia and Ian Smith -- Heath Randall (Optimistic), 23:00:46 02/15/08 Fri [1]
Ian Smith was a great man with courage and vision. He was so correct in his assessment of what would befall his beloved country of Rhodesia if so forced by the Brits to hand over the reigns of government totally and completely all at once to people inexperienced in all but terror. Unfortunately it came to pass and the politically correct crusaders who forced it have not only egg on their idealistic but misguided faces, but also the harsh judgment of history. Ian Smith was correct, he was brave and he had guts even in the midst of overwhelming odds. Rhodesia was a great nation with success of historical proportions. A great land of fruit and honey in the midst of an ocean of death, self-destruction and nations whose rebellions were more corrupt than the governments they yearned to replace. Let that Rhodesian spirit live on in the hearts and the minds of all the expatriates scattered around the globe. Rhodesia may be gone, but it's spirit of success and heart don't have to be. So much of which to be proud

Please people, don't start the same racist garbage which resulted in Markus having to close this forum down before. I see the start of the same stuff - in the spirit of " the Whites will go back" etc., etc..
My beloved country is gone. It is not coming back. Period.
Zimbabwe is a mess, we know that. We know why. That's the reason I and all Rhodies fought for so long. We lost for political reasons.
Now it is time to move on with our lives with the same Rhodesian pride and determination we showed all those years ago.
Ian Smith; BAYETE Sir. You were truly a man among men.

My name is Theodore/Ted. I am an American chap born
and raised. I was a in primary school when the
conflict in Rhodesia tranpired. I knew nothing of
international affairs at that time.
Read about former Rhodesia and admire Ian Smith.
In some aspects what transpired in Rhodesia is simalir
to Israel's present situation. However, the US does
back her. I lived there for a few years in the 1980'.
Just purchase Ian Smith's " Bitter Harvest". Clearly
the UN,US sold out Rhodesia. Now in the US, South Africa
we too are having our national sovergnity beign sold
out by corrupt politicans.
Does there still exist an active vesitage of the
Rhodesian Army who train ? You chaps had the best army
in the world. I feel like an honoary Rhodesian. Anyone
who cherises freedom, liberty is Rhodesian regardless
where they live. Plus could any chaps recommend a
good correspondence college. Is the University Zimbabwe
a solid academic institution ? Or any other college
. Would like to correspond with Rhodesians ?
Cheers

- Is Rhodesia gone forever -- Fred McIntyre (curious and somewhat upset), 15:59:59 01/18/08 Fri [1]
It has been years since we watched the final days of chaos
unfold in Rhodesia and the demise of the white dominated goverment. I sympathised then for the brave men and woman that were trying to sustain their way of life against horrific odds. It has revisited my thoughts lately with the death of Mr.Smith and how accurate his prediction of chaos was. When I see white farmers being murdered and run off their land and hords of uneducated blacks moved in to take their place I can't help but feel great anger. The resulting starvation and chaos is'nt a big surprise. Without sounding like a racist, is there any possibility of the whites returning to their former position in the country. Are there enough sound minds out there to realise that this big experiment has been an absolute disaster and support an overthrow of this tin pot dictator. It is my feeling that the Rhodesian whites were amoung the bravest and most organised and productive people in the world. Is a regathering of this people possible with some powerful support from somewhere. The shambles of a country that is left almost cries out to have them return. Or is Rhodesia gone forever?

Hi all, I just wanted to express my sympathies to all of you Rhodesians of mr Smith death. You had the most amazing country, which has been put to ruins. The death of Mr. Ian Smith made me curious about your past. News of Ian Smith and Rhodesia was mostly negative back in the days. Western media can be so single sided. It's easy to see today that the western world failed and kind of back stabbed Rhodesia. I hope and if so, Im glad that there are some of you Rhodesians here in Iceland. Cheers to you all! Lalli.

Sorry for the death of Mr. Smith. I remember the bad press from the 1970's. I've always been committed to civil rights, growing up in southern USA. I didn't realize then that blacks can be dictators, as well as whites. My friends and I cheered for Mugabe in 1980 as a freedom fighter. We were surely proven wrong.

- When will they return to happiness -- ns, 14:56:39 12/30/07 Sun [1]
How the prophesies of doom in 1980 were so far short of the current reality now so clearly suffered. When will he go and let the people black and white create a stable economy. Alas I think we all know the answer. From one not connected with the country but who even at 12 realised the tragic destiny of the country wanted to help and still does. N

- Ian Smith -- Simon Collins (Sad, hoping for better times), 16:07:58 11/25/07 Sun [1]
Ancient Britons were overtaken by the Romans, who made straight roads, efficient agriculture, international trade etc.
Then the Roman Empire collapsed? Did the Anglo-Saxons build on this great foundation? No, they relapsed into mud huts during the Dark Ages. They had no culture to handle these sophisticated concepts at the time.
Fast-forward to 20th century Africa. With regard to colony handover; what makes people think you can take an African leader from a completely different background to the westernised democracy model, put him in a smart suit, call him President and get success?
Ian Smith recognised this. He saw what was happening further north in Africa, and instinctively knew what would happen in Rhodesia. He was right then, and right now. Maybe a 50 year training period to create a new culture throughout the African civil service and society, then a graduated handover would have worked.
As a Brit, I only had the privilage of visiting soon after 1980. Nevertheless, I could still feel the strong national pride in a self supporting, industrious people. Great people in a great country. The place had something that I have never seen anywhere else.
My condolences to the Smith family and all Rhodesians worldwide. I am currently flying the Rhodesian flag at half-mast in respect.
History is tragically proving Ian Smith all too far sighted.
