The Crockery Cracks

With the silence of sorrow screaming continually
The music of the moment a weeping cacophony
They watch our tearful stares from our musical chairs
With hearts hollow and broken, dumbfounded and numb

He falls to his knees, this last prize scant pleasure
As we run and hug the life out of this treasure
While clutching and clawing our salty tears flowing
He whispers softly to me, ‘Look after them son’

In the dusk of this dead evening we grieve as he leaves.

Then we jolt and we scream and we all spin around
To the soul splitting sound of the crockery thrown down
Mum’s banshee wailing our senses assailing
In our cowering cuddle, we wait for her to succumb

Then in a stuttering blubbering agony she comes
Around my broken angels I wrap my scrawny arms
My heavy heart still heaving consoling all their grieving
Innocence incensed by the mantle of the man I become

The world turns and in time all wounds heal.

Yet the tears of all the years can’t quite quell my fears
And in startled surprise I might drop a cup and hear
Every time the crockery cracks, instantly transported back
To the sorrow screaming, to the night that broke our home.

Inside the man I am the boy I was still screams.

Wow, a strong piece, you've written how the past still hunts us very well. An effective piece.

Hello Black Star

I think we all have those triggers that take us back to times, both good and bad, that live in our conscious. This was one of my bad. Thanks so much for stopping by, and for your wonderful comments.

Max

A superb poem with the type of fearless voice
reserved for poets that are not about a put on.

This poem is one of my favorites since the sites
expansion. I am placing it in our "Hall of Fame"

For those of you that haven't visited the message
board: We now have an "Awards Hall" where most
awarded poetry will find a permenant home. The
Hall of Fame is now reserved for poems that move
a staff member in such a way that the poetry had
an impact on their day. This poem has done for
me just that.

Congratulations Max and thanks
for broadening my horizons
with your words.

Hello Andy

Oh wow, thank you so, so much for this award, it really does mean a lot to me. Some things I write come from the very raw of me, and that raw is humbled by, and very very appreciative of this praise.

Hi Max

I remember this classic above all classics from the time spent at the castle ,This has to be one of my all time favourite Poems and I'm so pleased that you won an award for this one.
If I could I would give an award too.

Max,

A very much deserved award, and one that I would have bestowed had Andy not done so. My reasons are simple. My Father was my world, a genius of a man who taught without teaching. I recall my Mothers puffy red eyes as she came to the door that day, the day he slipped away. You triggered deep emotion in this poet, as you have with all who read you, proving once again, the huge talent that is Max Hardy.

Peace and hope,

Paul
