Although it involves a flogging rather than a spanking, "The Whipping Post at Fort Mescalero" has probably been my favorite punishment story. More than just a straightforward account of corporal punishment, it's a story of self-discovery. The subject's latent interest in whipping, something he had not been previously aware of, is suddenly awakened by the sight of the fort's whipping post. The ranger recognizes that interest since he shares it too. The ranger plays it cool, but he shrewdly fuels the subject's growing interest by showing him the punishment whips in the museum and letting him handle them. Even while complying with the subject's request to be tied to the whipping post, the ranger pretends to be reluctant to do so. The ranger's efforts are finally rewarded when the subject pleads with the ranger to give him a "little taste" of the lash, which is everything the ranger could have hoped for. Taking the whip firmly in hand, the ranger no longer shows any hesitation in teaching the subject a painful lesson: why the whip has been the preferred instrument of corporal punishment throughout history.

(1) Michael Cole receiving a whipping in the movie "Chuka"
This movie poster was one of the few images I could find of a whipping at a western U.S. Army post. It was for the 1967 western movie "Chuka" which is available on DVD. Although I find most Hollywood movies ultimately frustrating in one way or another for us corporal punishment devotees, I think "Chuka" is better than most. The prisoner being flogged, actor Michael Cole, has a decent body, and the corporal applying the whip seems especially enthusiastic (and attractive too). Equally important, we get to see the prisoner wince in pain, and we do get to hear some of his outcries in response to the lash, although they are a little subdued for my taste. The terrifying screams of the prisoner in the non-western movie "Midnight Express" are much more convincing to me. My only disappointment with that film was that the punishment was not a spanking or a flogging, but rather a bastinado.

(2) Robert Conrad tied to a whipping post in "The Wild Wild West"
If I recall rightly, this scene took place at a fort in Mexico, and TV viewers anxious to witness James West's attractive body responding to the lash were sadly disappointed by a last-minute reprieve. Now, who would not want to see the lash applied to THAT back and THOSE shoulders?

(3) A pair of manacles
These manacles are attached together on a single vertical post while the ones described in my story were each attached to separate vertical posts.

(4) James Garner gets the lash in "Skin Game"
I haven't seen this movie, but since it is billed as a "comedy", it might not treat the subject of "flogging" with the seriousness (and severity) that it deserves and which the photo seems to imply. The wooden buildings evoke the flavor of the Old West, as does the rather primitive whipping post made of logs. I only wish they had made an effort to completely remove his shirt prior to the whipping. Okay, so James Garner's body is no match for Robert Conrad's. I still think that any guy tied to a whipping post looks more vulnerable if he is shirtless, leaving him helpless to protect his back from the sting of the whip.

(5) An outdoor "playroom" in the Old West?
Punishment in the Old West could be severe and merciless. Note that the guy "in charge" (the one wearing a hat) has come prepared to administer punishment with the whip he's holding in his left hand.

There's nothing so invigorating as an outdoor whipping in the fresh desert air!
I lamented the disappearance of this photo from its former location on the Internet. However, I am happy to report that it now resides on the Gay Cowboy Fetish website, as do a number of related photos depicting this cowboy's encounter with the bullwhip in the Arizona desert.
