This post focuses on one of the duties of a top, namely, determining the severity of the punishment to be administered to the bottom and then selecting an appropriate belt (or other instrument of pain) to deliver that level of punishment. This post contains opinions based on my own experiences which may differ from others.
When I was younger, I generally preferred to give or receive a whipping with a 1-3/4" wide black garrison belt. This preference was undoubtedly based on my erotic association of garrison belts with law enforcement and other "masculine" occupations. However, I've since come to the conclusion that garrison belts are usually too stiff to be ideal for whipping purposes unless they are extremely well-worn.
One time, many years ago, I submitted myself for punishment to another guy I had met in a bar. He tied me down on the bed and took off the medium-brown belt he was wearing. That belt was relatively narrow, perhaps only 1-1/4" wide, but it was well-worn and had probably seen much use as an instrument of discipline. Since I'm a relatively "light " bottom, it didn't take very long before that belt of his had reduced me to tears. However, I noticed that, although the belt whipping had been painful, somehow it had felt erotic as well.
Since that time, I've experimented whipping myself with various belts to see how they feel, both in terms of how much pain they deliver and whether they feel particularly erotic. Following are my not-very-scientific conclusions. They are, admittedly, over-generalizations. I don't recommend that the reader take them as gospel, but rather as a starting point for his own explorations.
(1) Well-worn belts have a more erotic feel and appearance.
(2) For some undetermined reason, brown belts often seem to be more supple and have a more erotic feel than black belts.
(3) 2" wide belts have a more erotic feel and may be applied with more force without significant injury. They tend to have more "thud" than "sting", and the "smacking" sound they create can be quite arousing (for both top and bottom), although it can be disconcerting to those who must keep the noise level of a punishment scene to a minimum.
(4) Stiff belts, belts with stitching along the edges, and very narrow belts (less than 1" wide) tend to sting more and don't feel particularly erotic to me.
(5) Unexpectedly, I've found that belts between 1" and 1-3/8" wide often provide the best combination of thud and sting and have a more erotic feel.
(6) Belts tend to sting more when they are not doubled over. However, applying a belt in that manner usually requires the top to wrap part of the belt around his hand a few times in order to shorten the belt and reduce wind resistance. I would only do this if the belt is made of very thick leather. Generally, I recommend that a belt be doubled over when used as a punishment implement. This will give a weightier feel to the belt, improve striking accuracy, and give the top the feeling that his belt is making a substantial impact each time it strikes the bottom's ass.
This post is primarily addressed to tops who might be unaware that not all belts feel the same when used for punishment.
