 Not telling the truth is a complicated matter. I have been in the situation where my dd will not be entirely truthful and take the fall to cover for a friend. That type of dedication is very admirable but also dishonest. She can be a great diplomat. She has also been known to tattle or stretch the truth so that someone gets in more trouble than they should be. I think that comes from her high sense of duty and abiding by the rules. It's a paradox deciding punishment for these offenses or even whether to punish at all.
Also, in the childs mind, even as adults the truth that they tell may not be the actual truth. It's the truth as they perceive it. Of course the offense has to be punished, but even a very intelligent child can be confused as to the reason. It's a real brain twister trying to explain that.
Then of course, as you said Dee there is the blatant lie. I have no remorse or confusion reddening a bottom for that.
