Interesting question. You are right, there are plenty of ways to inflict pain but I think maybe it's not so much the pain but also the "ritual" of a spanking. Standing there naked or nearly so, getting lectured, being made to talk about what you did and why (especially if there is an audience who can see or even who can just hear what is going on). It is a more drawn out process than a stomp on a foot, kick in the shin, twist of an arm. Those are painful, but having to think about what you did and knowing that pain will be inflicted soon because of it makes spankings more disturbing for the child or young adult who is to be punished. Just my 2 cents. Very good question. Looking foreward to hearing what others have to offer.
