Subject: Income Tax Sappy (1954)

It’s tax time at the Larry, Moe and Shemp household. The boys are so successful at cheating on their taxes that they become professional tax advisers, and end up wealthy! There is plenty of slapstick to go around, but this Shemp era classic is also replete with surreal and imaginative sight gags. Shemp doubles as a calculator, Larry slices a tough loaf of bread, and Moe shaves his nose and one eye. Instead of man bites dog, the headline here should read "sandwich bites man".

My favorite gag in this one prompts Moe to exclaim, "Hey fellas, my hot dog ran away!"

Income Tax Sappy includes another memorable dinner table sequence, a staple of Stooges shorts. Soup-erstitious Larry faces an adversarial bowl of lobster gumbo soup. The soup gag is a reworking from the earlier Stooges short Dutiful but Dumb.

One of the dinner guests is the bearded Mr Cash (Benny Rubin), a perfect foil for the Stooges food antics until we learn he is actually an agent of the tax department there to arrest them.

"Why, I’ll spaghetti you!"

Tim
